Is Valiance a reliable gun to help me with my Sword gear? >.<

Each normal attack does knockback to enemies, but not anywhere NEAR pulsar's kind of knockback. It's much smaller. Each shot knocks back maybe half a tile's worth of distance.
Some of what Aureate says (stopping turrets, knocking enemies into allies) is more likely to happen if you use charge attack, which has pretty strong damage and knockback.
Valiance is decent for getting some breathing room if you're fighting a few enemies. It's decent when fighting up to maybe 2-3 enemies. Just be sure to pause after firing 2 shots - it'll keep you mobile by avoiding reload.

It's a good, reliable gun which does normal damage, meaning nothing will resist it (although you knew that already). The damage isn't its prime attraction, though - at heart, Valiance is an utility gun. Each normal attack will do knockback to enemies, much like a Pulsar but without the irritating giant screenflash. You can use this to stop turrets from firing at you, suppressing them completely, which means it's a good sidearm for a swordsman since turrets are often troublesome and in places that would be hard to reach without taking damage. (The Rocket Puppy room in Firestorm Citadel comes to mind.) You can also use it to herd enemies into a corner or status bomb, with care. In addition, the bullets are of reasonable size and move much faster than the Pulsar line, making it a very viable option.
Just be careful when using it in a party with other people, because it's possible to knock enemies into your allies if you're not careful with it. Nothing causes rage quite so much as a mid-attack animation lumber to the face...
