Signing up through Steam makes any other client of Spiral Knights broken.
Currently, the only way for me to play is through Steam. Why? It is because there is not a single way to locate your password once you sign up through Steam. I am stuck with a username that looks like 'steam:123456789'. Because of this, I can not locate my predetermined password. Here is some proof that states that you can not locate your password with a colon in your username. I had to remove my username from the username bar for security reasons. I believe I have found a really easy solution to this without breaking any login problems. Allow people to normally use colons in their names.
Why are you asking this? Why not just play though Steam?
Steam takes up a lot of processing power for my old computer. The build I am currently on has a Pentium 4 (2.66 GHz) processor, 2 GBs of RAM, and an integrated GPU with an estimated memory size of 96 MBs. (Although the GPU is irrelevant when it comes to Steam.) Clearly this build can't handle too much. I can run Spiral Knights pretty well on it, surprisingly enough. There's one catch, though. Steam. Steam takes up a good amount of processing power. I'm almost positive I can get a smooth 30 FPS without Steam on.
Clearly it isn't a major problem, but I'm pretty annoyed because of it.
As a fellow Steam linked user I am unable to interpret what the problem is for the first point. Do you want to have symbols in your account name? Are you trying to change your password? Are you going to guess how many gumballs are in this jar?
The second one I can understand perfectly. Steam inflates very quickly. In Firestorm Citadel I would be derping around as normal, then I suddenly get lag spikes. Turns out Steam went from about fourty thousand kilobytes to a hundred thousand or so. What is this nonsense? Three Rings probably has no way to work around this since the issue is out of their hands so all we can do is hold these picket signs and share stories of how we got these lag scars.
