CORRECTION: USE SNARLY'S GATE!

I am currently looking for people to do a very quick study for my master's dissertation. The study is really simple, and all you have to do is:

-With one other person, make it to Moorcarft Manor (through Snarly's gate)
-Without communicating with the other person (verbally or chatting)
-While recording the game and narrating what happens in the game (in English)

There is also a short interview for after you play the game, and I get a chance to look over the videos. Everything is really quick and there is no hidden agenda or deceit. And I will be more than happy to share the findings of my research with anyone who is interested.

ANYONE WHO AGREES TO TAKE PART WILL GET ENTERED IN A DRAWING FOR A MIXED PRIZE OF COINS, CE, AND MATERIALS!

If you are interested, please email spiralknightsstudy@gmail.com or reply to this post.

*Note, due to ethical reasons, it is best if any participants are over the age of 18. Good English skills also preferred.

Make it to Moorcroft,

Make it to Moorcroft, starting from where? And why Moorcroft? Could we do a mission run instead?

Also, since you are requiring us to record, could you point the way to some recording software?

Hey

To Vtmoon, awesome! As soon as I can round up another person, I'll get you running as soon as possible. Thanks in advance for any help, I think I've already coerced as many of my friends to help as I can lol!

And to Aquajag, it would just be starting from the Arcade so only six levels and one of those little checkpoints in between. The reason why I didn't go with the missions is because some of the people I am having do it are noobs so they would have to play for a while before they got to the mission I would want them to run, and I don't think they would have the attention span for that (even though Spiral Knights is pretty sweet).

As for recording software, I have been suggesting the free trial version of Camtasia. It is a really great program (a simplified Adobe After Effects). The project files can get quite massive unfortunately though (like 35 gigs after an hour of play time) because it doesn't compress the data as it records but just dumps it into one big file. After you publish the movie though, the final file is "normal" sized, and you can delete everything after you give me the finished product. You can also use whatever other program you prefer, but many of the other free ones seem to have a recording limit of about 2 gigs due to the file formats which doesn't give much time for playing. If you want to check it out, here is the link to Camtasia: http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.html

The problem with this, is that many of the people that play the game can and will CRUSH everything in the first tier of the game, just as well without talking to each other.

Right now, I'm planning on doing this with someone from my guild- most if not all of which are T2 to low T3... and I can guarantee that whoever ends up doing it with me will be well versed in terms of the clockworks. I'll probably choose someone that knows things though- so that we'd both immediately go for the arenas, and would both immediately go for the danger rooms, and would know to leave the menders intact so that venom veilor can do its work.

I'd like to suggest making people run this in the tier that they fit into, so as to scale the difficulty a bit... at least we wouldn't one hit KO everything in one hit... maybe have to silently plan our gear?

Its your project though, and regardless of whether you change any part of it, I'll take part. Who knows, maybe that would ruin the experiment.

Fehzor: You are totally right. I just run it this way to try to give some consistency to the project as the last three levels before Moorcraft Manor will then be the same for everyone. Personally, I would love if I could make all six levels identical just so that whatever happens can't just be written off as differences in the levels, but the Clockwork rotates so I don't think there are really too many places were there are a number of identical(ish) levels, and even fewer of them that would be in reach of everyone regardless of skill or time already spent playing. That's why I decided for the route I mentioned.

It would be awesome if I could pair you with someone you don't know (although I understand why people might not get excited about that). But if you run it with someone you know and is really high level, and you two go through it at lightning speed (even with the danger rooms)... as long as you keep up the narrating, it should be fine. Actually, it would probably mean less coding for me lol! Not that that is really something I should be promoting lol! In fact, the first run of the experiment was with someone who was a total noob and someone with four star+ gear, and the four star+ gear guy made short work of almost everything, but I still got AMAZING data.

Maybe you and Vtmoon could run it? I don't know what level (s)he is or if you are even in the same timezones. Or if you know of other people who would like to do it, that's cool too.

P.S. I am surprised and impressed that I've gotten feedback so quickly. I figured I'd get hit by trolls and griefers or pushed down the message board, but you guys rock. Definitely CE, crowns, and materials in it for all of you. Although you guys are probably elite enough that it would be like a drop in the ocean lol!

To Anyone Interested

CORRECTION: USE SNARLY'S GATE!

To any of you who would like to do it, I'll be bumming around Haven 1 Arcade (if there is room) this Saturday (23rd of June 2012) near the Moorcraft gate probably around 2pm London time, and I'll stay there for several hours (although I might minimize the game now and then for a short bit just so I can get some other work done). You don't have to run it with me, but if you want me to be there in case you have any questions or need help finding the second person to run it with, that will be a sure time to see me, although I will also be there more times as well of course.

My knight's name is PileOfWeeWaks so feel free to pm me or friend me, or you can send me an email at SpiralKnightsStudy@gmail.com if you want to set-up a specific time or have any questions.

Here is a basic consent form (you don't have to sign it or anything, but just so you know that I am ethically treating all my participants): https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B0BdetdBQoRZaU5KZXFkOWIzSTA

And here is the instructions: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B0BdetdBQoRZNm45RTJMQTkyRkk
They are very detailed because I wanted people with no computer knowledge to be able to do my study so don't be put off by the detail of it all. It just takes about 2 minutes to set Camtasia up (if that is the program you want to use), and most of it is pretty straight forward. Oh, and where it says "Last Name", you can just put your knight's name instead.

Thanks to anyone who helps! I will give you CE and crowns for your help and materials if you want them... lol.

P.S. To The-Rawrcake: Lol, maybe you can just do it for the CE/crowns lol!

I'd like to try something

I'd like to try something like this. These research things are always fun and interesting.

I feel like I'm missing reading something though. Could just be me, but what is the purpose/ goal of this research again? As in, what are we trying to solve/discover/etc.

The purpose wasn't stated.

The purpose wasn't stated. You're not missing anything.

I'm interested, but probably I won't bother with this until, like, Tuesday or something. The 26th. If it's still an option then, let me know. Also, do the person/people we run with need to be on it too? or can i just get friends to join and let them know i won't be talking? Can they chat?

Yeah, I haven't stated the research topic. There is no deceit, and I am not trying to trick anyone, but if I state my hypothesis directly, there is a good chance that people will consciously or unconsciously try to change the data. What I can say is that I am looking at something very basic and (potentially) very wide-spread and "normal". I'm just curious about how it works. Sorry for the planned vagueness.

Anyway, I will be in SPK tomorrow at 2pm (as I mentioned) in Haven 1 Arcade near the Moorcraft Manor gate, but I will be collecting data for probably weeks from now so don't think that it just has to be tomorrow if that doesn't work for you. In fact, as long as you follow the research plan, I don't even have to be there if you would rather just do it at a time that fits best for you.

And to reply to Aquajag: Yeah, I would like two people to simultaneously run the gate together without using the chat or any verbal communication techniques (and just to be anally retentive because I really want my project to turn out right... with both parties recording their screen and their own narration of what is happening in the game). The narration comes almost naturally. I would really like it to just be two people who aren't talking to each other and that's all in the instance at that time.

Oh, and this should be obvious, but you shouldn't be in earshot of the other participant while you are running the study.

And just because I can't say it enough, thank you very much to anyone who helps. You are definitely saving me here, and I will share my findings with anyone interested.

Hmmm, sounds interesting.

I'm up for it, I'm free most of the time on Mondays and Tuesdays.

I'll probably use my character Mr-Baldy.

Wait a minute, Pileofweewaks...

Don't ALL gates lead to Moorcroft Manor? Or is there a specific gate you want us to go through?

Oh, and yeah, I'm in, if I can get my friend to do this with me. I'm definitely interested in where this is going, too... Best of luck, Pile :)
