I'm spotting that on average, normal rank missions take about 20 energy total.
Does this deviate at all? I tried the wiki but I only found descriptions and lists, never any kind of "You'll need a total of [10-30] energy to complete this mission".
Which would be kind of helpful. I'd hate to try do a quest/mission thing, only to waste my remaining energy because I couldn't complete it.

I dont know what rank mission you are on...
But as far as I know, missions up to 5-2 (Although it may be a bit further) have two levels per mission. Later on, the average mission should have three levels in a gate. Prestige missions always contain two levels however.
You can also do what Rangerwill said to check how many levels there will be.

Still, Iron-Blast's tip was very helpful. Missions have 2 levels, that's good to know.
