Make the inital explosion larger, and make a delay before firing the projectiles. This way anything that's gonna get hit by all the shards is knocked out of range.

Also you should be able to tilt the intire bomb pattern. However your crosshair should be inbetween the lines of the two shards nearest too it, to pervent making it handle like a gun.
