We have seen gremlin bombers in the game tossing around bombs. That got me thinking like everyone, how cool would it be if us the players could do that too? Since the mechanics for throwing already exists i.e. throwing pots, capsules, perhaps this idea could be implemented later along with suitable game premise.

The Mine Launcher would have no normal fire - or a slow or low damage bolt if it does have a normal shot. Its unique aspect would be its charge attack; where it would shoot out a bomb that would plant itself on the ground like a normal bomb after hitting something or reaching its range. It comes with a gun charge time reduction. That is, it would take a bit longer than it would to just charge a bomb. As the gun stars are increased charge time reduction decreases and its range increases.

Now I know what you’re all thinking - the bomb selection issue. Hear me out.. If there are no bombs equipped, the gun would launch the humble proto bomb. If the player has the same starred bomb as the gun equipped it would launch that instead. If there is more than one same -starred bomb equipped, the bomb used by the gun would change every time the gun is switched.

While the practicality of such a gun is questionable at best, I really think bomb enthusiasts might enjoy the deviation from standard game play. To ensure it does not confuse new players, it could be placed as a reward at higher tiers. Heck, this could also be an interesting addition to the Blast Network where the players would be given a limited shot Mine Launcher as a power-up. Another tribute to the classic bomberman series if you will..

Would any bomber be honest if they said that they have never at one time fantasized just chucking that explosive goodness back at that pesky devilite instead of lugging it around?

Also.. not the best of drawings, but I just had to put together a few drafts of how this was swimming around in my head. http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/5913/minelauncherfin.jpg

Anyways, tell me what you guys think. Is everything sufficiently balanced? I’d appreciate help with all the flaws that you can see so far. Edit: title updated, please read below

I think we're getting that

Incase you didn't read RSS is going to get some changes that will act like that. I'm also not sure on having one weapon when I could have two.

hm..

That is a beautiful bomb - its long range capabilities look great. The exploding shards planted to the grounds would be interesting too. I haven’t been able to play Spiral Knights all that much recently so I’m not up to speed with things.

Though you have to admit from a purely aesthetic perspective the idea of throwing bombs around like energy vials is still pretty fun. Functionality wise I suppose something like this could throw off the balance in gameplay; I’m sure the Devs have given this some thought. With the advent of the Coliseum, only way this can be introduced safely is as a power-up in the blast network.

Even then, I see problems - it’ll be difficult using it in the narrow mazes. Unless the bombs starts to go over the blocks. Imagine the attacking strategies then! But yeah the spawn rate should be very low, like twice or thrice per match. I remember in the old bomberman game defeated players could occasionally throw bombs from the stands. Those made for some very entertaining disruptions. Not that I’m saying we should have system like that - just that, throwing bombs like that worked.

Any more feedback? Anything you can think of adding to the concept? No doubt the suggestion has popped up before in the past but let’s discuss it again.

New ideas

I suppose the concept of the mine launcher is too complicated to be implemented. Apart for the spirit of fun, there'd be little incentive* for the devs to go into all that trouble.. But I'd have liked have a nice discussion with you guys nonetheless.

Anyways, I was trying to come up with ways to simplify this idea so it would work. Then it hit me when playing bomberman again - a power up that would enable kicking the mine forward. I loved doing that in the bomberman. It isn't as game breaking as it sounds. Done improperly the user would get themselves bomb trapped and dead faster than a love puppy.

Also, thought of a new obstacle map for the Blast network: Stadium Rage/Riot. As the name suggests, here the Contestants will be subjected to the ire of deeply displeased spectators. The hordes of angry devilites and gremlins in the stands are going to occasionally rain low ranged bombs and stun inflicting debris on the players. Maybe even once in a while a particularly outraged Spookat or Grimalkin would take to the field and rage around the maze pacman style xD

The throwing aspect could work like this - pattern of invisible trap tiles all over the map that randomly shifts every minute. If an unsuspecting player lingers more than a second on one of them, trap is triggered and they are stunned or will have the deal with the bomb. It could be an interesting survival map that some players might enjoy, but I am concerned that it will be frustrating for new or lagging players. And the extra coding by the devs.. What do you guys think?

(from first para) * Unless there was something like a little energy gate to open and get the power-up. This could potentially backfire - doing all that is going to draw attention to the player, making him a target.
