Seriously, they float right through the light. This happened on the first level of "whipping and mishandling."
Reported a while ago... IIRC people found out it's a graphical glitch - the candle the grimalkin flew through wasn't really lit. Light it again and it should work.
Still, good to remind OOO to fix this.
