Swiftstrike is the only shield wich makes any difference on your guns, but you'll still need anoher random shield to upgrade and get clearance.
Aegis can fill that slot with free recipes but even wth that in mind I wouldnt make it lol. Grab a Volcanic Plate.

Swiftstrike and an upgrade mook is generally suggested, as gunners rarely are fighting up close.
However, if you are not confident about your skills in gunning (like me...), then I suggest a shield for each of the three specialized damage types.

I suggest not starting a new gunner.
Just get gunner gear on your existing knight. Then you can use all those shields you already have.
Swiftstrike Buckler or whatever shield best counters the prominent damage type of the area
