It's been, what, a year since Punch and Vise 'moved' in? And have they, at any point during their stay, made any attempt to clean up their sooty mess? That question is rhetorical. Of course they haven't.
What I propose is that Punch and Vise sweep up the black dust, which has no doubt become indelible by now, and clear the rocks that were formed when they 'moved' into the remains of Vatel's shop.

That black dust is the residue from the countless dreams they have broken over the year.
