Status/Defense trinkets vs. Heart Pendants

I know most people prefer using CTR/ASI/DMG trinkets in their trinket slots, but since atm my primary focus is on getting more varied gear, I haven't yet bothered to craft them. Only crafted heart trinkets because they are necessary for LD.
So now back to my main question, is it better to use those trinket slots for status/defense trinkets (which are basically free, thanks to the tokens) or the heart pendants?
For example, scenarios:
In HoI, I use Snarbolax set, do I equip 2 Dread Skelly Charm or 2 Penta Heart Pendants?
In FSC too, I use Snarbolax set, and sometimes use 2x Soaking Wetstone Pendant and sometimes 2x Penta-Heart Pendants. Which is the better choice?

And please no advice on how I should just dodge everything, and not need defense trinkets. I am just using them because I have the slots unlocked and don't consider crafting ASI/DMG trinkets as a top priority.

PS: My heart trinkets are currently 4* though, I don't know if it's worth the cost to upgrade them, so might as well compare 5* status trinkets to 4* heart pendants. Also all of this question is in regards to PvE, not PvP.

In general, it is best to use Heart Pendants.
It takes two defence/resistance trinkets to get one max.
The extra health will be more valuable.

But what about the extra defense it gives you? For example, consider a hypothetical scenario where in HoI you are wearing full Snarb+ 5* heart pendants. Suppose a devilite snowball toss does 4 life bars of damage. And in a case where you are wearing full snarb + 2x Dread Skelly Charm, it takes out 3 life bars. It would take about 12 hits to make the Defense trinkets more useful than the Heart trinkets, even lesser if it's 4* or lesser heart trinkets.
I'm not sure about the damages, they are just numbers I am pulling out of thin air, so has anyone ever tested out how much "extra" defense we get from 2 trinkets? Since I read on the wiki that, one 5-star trinket is equivalent to a Medium, so 2x that, and how many pips of difference does one Maximum! make?

The answer: not much.
The damage reduction you would get from that much defence is not sufficient to warrant it over health trinkies.

shock maybe

I generally agree with Aureate, but here are some counterpoints.

In some circumstances, shock protection is more important than health. In some extreme circumstances, the same could be said of freeze protection.

As you go deeper into the Clockworks, you get larger vitapods, so that the relative effect of a 5-star health trinket goes down. For example, if you're in the Shadow Lairs, then your +6 trinket is not very big compared to your +25 vitapod.

I'd have said the status

I'd have said the status trinkies, when you consider the last heart rule, as extra health will still go down very quickly in T3 (so having less health won't cause much difference), whereas status trinkies reducing damage/length can do a lot more to save your life.

Then again, I rarely use either, as I prefer CTR trinkies for my bombs...

Having used both,

My answer for any situation is based on the following question:

"Am I more worried about getting inflicted with a status, or getting hit?"

Generally, this means that health trinkets are better except for areas with lots of shock or fire, some areas with freeze, or an area like Compound 42 where most of the difficulty comes from the statuses being inflicted. Shock resist always always always trumps health especially, since an awkward shock is likely going to make you get hit again.

Damage resist trinkets never cross my mind because even the best kind won't make me die in fewer hits than a heart pendant would, and since they only protect against one kind of damage instead of effectively all four, they're pretty much strictly worse.

Thanks :3

Thanks for your opinions everyone. So more or less I think the consensus comes down to using Status trinkets when absolutely necessary, and otherwise heart trinkets seem to be a better option. Thank you all~
