"Unable to initialize the game's graphical display" - help?

Hello,

I am having the error message, "unable to initialize the game's graphical display".

The error log said something about starting up in full screen, and being unable to start.

I assume this means we need to get the game into windowed mode, outside of the game parameters, as I can't log into the game to change them.

We have tried to access and change the registries, in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JavaSoft\Prefs\projectx however this has nothing within it except a single value which says "default", and nothing else.

What else can be done? Any help would be appreciated

We have also tried -
- Updating all graphics, java, computer, etc drivers. They are all current
- Uninstalling and reinstalling Spiral Knights (it keeps trying to play in windowed mode)

Same issue

I'm getting the same issue. Seems like if the game could start in windowed mode instead of full screen, it'd work and not just go to a pure black screen. How do we start spiral knights in windowed mode without going into the game?

Based on what I see in my (non-Windows) Java prefs file, the key is "fullscreen" and it takes values of "true" or "false".

Stupid question time

Where can I find the file to change the full screen value from true to false? The only thing I can find is project x, and that does nothing.

Also, this is what project x has in it.

Hmm..

As far as I can see, there is nothing in the registry that deals with this? I just have default and language....

Seems that adding in fullscreen and false to the projectx registry didn't do a thing. Also tried adding in display_mode with 1024, 600, 32, 60 to see if that might also help it.

I've just updated to windows 8.

Not sure if this is relevant to your problem. I have a brand new, untweaked install of windows 8 professional with java and spiral knights installed. My graphics card is an NVidia GeForce 8600 GT. When I run SK, this is the error I get. I've checked with NVidia's website, and the driver they provide there is the same version installed automatically by windows update (306.97). According to the requirement information on the wiki, this should work fine. But it doesn't.
