I wanted to make a dread skelly shield - because it would be a tiny bit sturdier than Crest of Almire, as long as I'm not facing fire and shock.
So I crafted two skelly shields - and may be this is a sign of the end of the world, I got one UV for each.
First: Piercing MAX
Second: Freezing MAX
Yup. Must be near the end of the world.
At first I thought Piercing is useless. The bar is so short, and it's not gonna grow as I level it up.
But I found this:
http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Unique_Variant#Helmets.2C_Armor_Suits.2C_a...
"Bonus damage protection, much like base damage protection, increases with the star-rating. For example, a low elemental UV on a 4* helm could appear longer than a medium elemental UV on a 2* helm. This assumption is made based on watching the tooltip, and remains untested."
So does that mean if I upgrade my Piercing MAX skelly shield into dread skelly, the piercing defense would mean something? How long would that bar be? Can anyone with a Piercing max dread skelly shield post a screenshot?
Then I thought the freezing is useful. Having the status defense would allow it to block more attacks that would inflict freezing.
But then someone mentioned that the freeze is already maxed on skelly shield line, and the UV would be wasted.
I found this tiny thread:
http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/28736
And my knowledge on how status defense UV works on armors lead me to think the Freezing MAX UV would NOT be wasted. Does anyone know for sure?
By the way, the wiki page "Abilities" is another (maybe better) source for information on this topic. There have also been threads about whether status UVs are useful on shields, but I don't remember their conclusions. Search?
On armor (suits and helmets), it is often valuable to have multiple Max! status resistances. That is, protection beyond a single Max! is definitely not wasted. But, as you know, shields work very differently from armor.
From using Grey Owlite Shield and Crest of Almire in FSC, it seems that these shields can withstand a zombie's breath (which is pure fire, with no damage content) forever. So it seems that more fire protection on them is not valuable. This is not to say that GOS and CoA can withstand a fire grate forever. But fire grates do not do pure fire; they also do elemental damage. The damage is how a fire grate breaks GOS and CoA, I suspect.
So, returning to your question, my guess would be that more freeze protection on Dread Skelly Shield is not useful.
