Getting to 5* legit without doing a single HoH is possible, but how far exactly can a Knight go before he cannot go any farther?
Is a tier 1 or 2 able to get all the SL clearances?
Can we pass HoH via SL grinding?
Just some questions...

Random question, if at T1-T2, you do get invited to T3 for a shadow lair without having the T3 clearance, would Shadow Lair completion be valid?
Say you do snarby, next time, when you become a true T3 will you be able to open Ice Queen?

Isn't it still possible to play Spiral Knights without doing any rank missions? You just play old-school --- the Clockworks.

The wiki article "Shadow Lair" explains the clearance criteria super-explicitly. Let me know if you find an error in it. That goes for you too, Little-Juances.

I can't imagine why grinding Shadow Lairs would be a practical way of getting to 5-star. Why not grind the FSC stratum (and the stratum before it) in the Clockworks? I must be missing something here.
I think I'm missing something too. Pretty sure people were wearing full sets of 5* gear at least a year before Hall of Heroes was even an idea. I know I was at least.
You can still play clockworks but they make you do the HoH missions before letting you pass through T2/T3 (without an invite), you can't just get through with the appropriate gear anymore.
They might be. They'd need someone to invite them to T3 though. (and of course likely carried through it)
You can pass HoH with SL grinding. Do UFSC, get enough tokens to get all the Ancient Plate items and Fang of Vog. But you can do that with regular FSC too.
