I have been using Blizzard's Authenticator (security token) on my Android smartphone and iPad. It works pretty nicely and I think this is something Three Rings should consider implementing for their games. Here are the links: Android and iOS.

How it works:

  1. install Authenticator apps on your devices (smartphone, tablet);
  2. the apps will give you 2 sets of number: one set you will enter into your user account and another set you will enter when you login. Note: the first set is static and the second set will be rengenerated at about 30 seconds interval.
  3. login to your game and it will ask you for your ID, password as well as the authenticator code. Run your apps and input the number it displays into the login screen.

I think having this kind of Authenticator for SK would not only relieve work loads on the GM team (fewer account theft), but also prevent guild members who committed unethical acts (e.g. stealing from Storage) and then blame it on "my account has been hacked".

i was honestly confused about

i was honestly confused about this, but if your saying we can use a phone to recover a lost (stolen or "hacked") account, we can use our phones to recover it, then by all means, this is okey...

if it's to access somthing on your account.... then i have no idea what to say

Blizzard uses it so it must be good lol

+1, even though I have battle.net accounts and don't use blizzards. As long as its optional, I'm fine with it.

For people who are confused, here is a FAQ.

TL ; DR. You do not "restore" your account with your Authenticator. You login with your usual ID and password, together with a key generated on the fly by the Authenticator. The only interaction the Authenticator has to your account is, you have to enter two sets of code (one static, one dynamically generated every time you login) into your account. It does not do the following:

  • recover your password;
  • access your account;
  • pour coffee in the morning.

Another idiot...

Wow, surprised to see another thread about apps. Dude, you need java too. Well, in order to connect to Spiral knights, you need java. You can't connect to Spiral knights if you don't have java or if you lost your data of your account...

WHy ben.

-_-

I can log into the forums using a Iphone.

e's not talking about logging into the game, but accesses the account. You don't need java to log into the site. That stuff is not needed by Java.

First of all, it's Sky from

First of all, it's Sky from now on...

Second, he said "login to your game", and it DOES NOT mean logging in the forums. He said "game", not "forums"

Third, how can you login to the game then? Have a app that can restore your account, then go login in your computer? I say that makes sense.

EDIT: What he said ^

It's an extra lock with a new combo generated every 30 seconds. Something Three Rings should seriously consider implementing to make the game more enjoyable and most importantly, safer.

Skyguarder may know how Java works, but not authenticators

This wouldn't log into the game from your phone. All it needs is your account information, and it generates a code that you need to put into your account on your PC in order to log in on your PC.

I hope you realize that your Authenticator got hacked and people stole D3 and WoW accounts, last year and when WoW peaked in 2007. So on a 5 years interval, this device got compromised each time Blizzard was at risk with higher server population

How it works:

install Authenticator apps on your devices (smartphone, tablet);
the apps will give you 2 sets of number: one set you will enter into your user account and another set you will enter when you login. Note: the first set is static and the second set will be rengenerated at about 30 seconds interval.
login to your game and it will ask you for your ID, password as well as the authenticator code. Run your apps and input the number it displays into the login screen.

This will be easily brute forced... or by-passed by generating enough code to make the system overload and just go through while it resets (Edit: This is how some people got through Blizzard Authenticator, there was multiple breaches using different methods)

I think having this kind of Authenticator for SK would not only relieve work loads on the GM team (fewer account theft)

Geezus, yes developing an Authenticator for SK is really productive and will really helps GM
/sarcasm

but also prevent guild members who committed unethical acts (e.g. stealing from Storage) and then blame it on "my account has been hacked".

People that get hack deserve to get hack, you can't brute force into this game. You have to intentionally give your password to a "Free Energy" program... That's the only way to "hack" or your sister stole your laptop (which is common when people are in trouble... dunno why)

People stole from your guild you report them and be patient, things will resolve on it's own and people get IP ban, not just a simple ban...

I don't get why, no it's not like magic and OOO is a tiny-small company, not a big corporate who lost their original swag (I'm looking at you. Blizzard). They don't have the resource nor do they need something like this. Hacking is not an issue in Spiral Knights because you cannot make IRL money with fake items. That is all. If it were then we would get hack daily. Hackers wants profit... And a hacker will soon realize that he has to fish in order to "hack" in this game...

So no... No need of this

(I do own a Blizzard Authenticator and knowing people got through annoys me that I bought this garbage for 10$)

Edit 2: Prove me that people really got hacked and then we can talk...

Edit 3: Forgot your Steam can get hacked, but that's not really OOO concern...

@ Klipik if you actually read my post you wouldn't even ask but since you didn't even read, let me copy and paste it...

There...

It is not worth the time and effort OOO will put in... The MMO AES security are fine... The only way to get your acc password is to use a SQL exploit, or overload or brute-force your way into the server main data. Granted all the password are AES secured (probly in 512 mb) but you can check the encrypted version of a password and if it match then it's the right password

You see how difficult it is to actually hack someone? People that does it do it to make a profit, not because they have free time and they play SK and they want stuff. If they want stuff they will hack someone outside SK and use his money to buy stuff in the game

Learn a little bit what you are talking about please!

I even put google for you to use...

Edit: And IF Blizzard one is badly designed with all the resource they have, what make you think that OOO will get it first try, first shot? Blizzard is a huge company that make lots of profit and Autheticator is another way to make money, little program that has an obvious flaw sold for 10$ to millions of people... see where it's going? Blizzard choose this option as market profit. And it worked... Just people got hacked along the way and people who were once addicted fan of Blizzard now resent and hate that company who lost his original touch

except you can

SK items/currency ->steam trade-> TF2 items ->steam marketplace-> real money

But either way, your argument is based on "it should not be done because it might not work". The possibility of failure isn't a reason to dismiss an idea, in my book at least.
