I'm having the same problem with my desktop, though audio has never been an issue. Everything worked fine on my Dell laptop in terms of graphics, but on the desktop, some small portions of items and backgrounds are transparent. For example: I have a Cursed Tome Stand in the lobby of my Guild Hall, on which there is a book. On the desktop, this book is not visible and some components of gears in the backgrounds are also transparent. I still have this issue and posted here so that Softhead could see the possible solutions as well. My computer's information is as follows:
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3 (2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.130107-0416)
System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs)
Name: Intel(R) G33/G31 Express Chipset Family
Chip Type: Intel(R) GMA 3100
I have this problem on windows 7 when some other application playing sound is on when I launch the game via Kongregate it can be some flash game, youtube or other video streaming sites, even audio players but everything works fine on Steam. There might be some issue with how the system handles java and other applications sound output, but I'm no expert. I just close other applications and tabs and it works fine most of the times.
Does your laptop happen to use Intel 3 or 4 series Express Graphics? If so the black charge attack is likely due to the graphics device not being fully compatible with Spiral Knights. Sometimes this can be resolved by setting the graphics to Low and by enabling Compatibility Mode. It may also be possible to resolve this issue by updating the driver directly from Intel's Download Center. You may need to uninstall the current graphics driver before a new one will install.
Do you have the latest drivers installed for your laptop? Also, about the black antigua charge that might be your laptop not supporting the graphics or you might have "compatibility mode" checked in the advanced settings in-game. You posted far too little information. What kind of laptop is it? Which model? How old is it?
