Barbarous Thorn Shield
or
Grey Owlite Shield

Barbarous Thorn Shield

Pros
Sword Damage Bonus
Good for Jelly King runs
It is a good sheild for
SwordMaster

Cons
It is not really good for Vanaduke runs
It is hard to make because
Twisted Targe cost about 50,000 crowns

Grey Owlite Shield

Pros
It is an essential for Vanaduke
It is easier to make

Cons
It isn't a SwordMaster sheild
It doesn't have the Sword Damage Bonus like The Barbarous Thorn Shield

My thoughts.

Really, there is no better shield of the two. They both have different types of defense and can be used in different playstyles. Granted, there are situations where one is better than the other, but as a general purpose shield, it's completely up to personal preference.

Yes, they follow different philosophies. Defense or Damage?

Ultimately you'll want Barbarous (or even a swiftstrike), but first you have to learn to dodge and evade enemies so an Owlite is not a bad choice. You don't have to rush it. Measure your skill level.

I agree. Like all equipment choices in this game, it comes down to offense (BTS) vs. defense (GOS). The better you are at dodging, the more reasonable it is to use highly offensive armor and shield, such as BTS, Swiftstrike Buckler, Chaos, etc. And the protection on BTS isn't terrible at all. I use it in Firestorm Citadel, to up my sword damage.

The Twisted Targe recipe costs 50,000 crowns? Yikes. Just get it yourself from Basil. Is it really that hard to find?

Well, I said "recipe", so I was talking about the recipe. But I was just repeating your "50,000 crowns" figure. I was actually asking you a question, not making a statement.

Are you talking about buying the item itself, unbound from someone? Why would you do that? Buying unbound items is (A) expensive, because the seller has to pass the unbinding fee on to you, and (B) unsatisfying, compared to earning the item yourself.

Well...

If you are making your first shield, go for the Owlite series as they are easy to make and you will not have to worry about Vanaduke too much. Then you can go for either SSB, BTS, or a CoA. If you already made a non-piercing 5* shield then go for BTS
