Shield + Dash = Shield Dash

At first I disliked the idea of having two dashes, but the two dashes are each useful in their own way, so now I'm realizing that what I actually hate is having two dash buttons. It would make more sense to have a single button for the regular dash that would activate the shield dash if pressed while you were blocking. It would make much more sense than the current setup. In the very least, there should at least be a box at the bottom of the control menu you can check that says "hold block and dash to shield bash?".

Edit;

Please note that the shield dash activates IF you press the dash button WHILE you hold down the shield button.

You have to be holding down the shield button. Your shield actually being up or down is not what is required.

This means you can shield dash before your shield activates. So the shield raising delay isn't transferred onto the dash. It also means you can regular dash after releasing your shield button before your shield is lowered. So you can block and then dash away normally, without having to let your guard down for a small second in order to not accidentally do a shield dash instead.

eyes trying to see the end to another end

good point
less keys = more freedom to customize the buttons

about me, my "dash button" is "middle mouse button" and shield is "right button"

I assigned my Shield Bash + Dash to the buttons on my mouse. When I perform a Dash through Shield + Shield bash it seems to get stuck on/toggled on, because my Knight performs a dash on their own as soon as the cooldown's finished until I press the Dash button again which is a little annoying.

One keybind for each is enough. The "Shield + Shield Bash = Dash" thing is silly.

fine fine -puts hands up-

I would like this to be an option were the player can combine them into one key, I perfr having them separate but the option should be avaible.

+1 for optional.

I shield a lot, and dash a lot, but don't shield dash a lot. If I have to release my shield and then dash, it would leave me open to damage while im surrounded by a horde. I also think this would pose a problem to people who don't live in the continental US or don't have optimal connection as things that are happening in the game appear on our screen a short time after they've already happened. So I have to keep my shield up because I don't know if I'm getting hit at the current moment in time.

I certainly wouldn't mind

I certainly wouldn't mind having the option to keep it the way it is now, though I kinda feel like my way should be the default. Even if it wasn't, I'd be muy bueno if the suggestion was an option. Just give me a box that makes you shield dash if you press the dash button while the shield button is held.

@Inf-Stand
Your shield stays up a tiny bit after you release the key (or I lag), so you could release the key and then regular dash before your shield goes down, as long as the game only did the shield dash combination while the key is held, and not while the shield is up.

On another note, I still haven't found a great control setup. I've got a 4 button mouse with a scroll wheel that can act as a 5th button. I have my right button as my attack button, left as my walk forward, my far right as my dash and my far left as shield dash, scrolling to change weapons. WASD movement, space to block. I kinda wish I could push my mouse wheel in to change two weapons, that way if I've got four weapons, I never have to scroll twice to get to something. Though that's mostly just OCD, you can switch weapons twice before the selected weapon even appears, the shield dash idea would actually help me play.

You can force the keys to

You can force the keys to your liking, you're not obliged to follow the limitations of the binding menu if you know how to work the registry.
Example:
Bind Modifier to A
Bind Dash to A
Bind Shield to B
Bind Shield Bash to Modifier + B

This method assumes that you're not using your current modifier key for anything

I don't have internet that supports it at the moment, so I haven't tested this method out, so I give no garuntee that it won't crash java/your PC/the world. But don't worry, you'll be backing up your control scheme.
We'll call the key you want dash to be as "A", and the key you want Shield to be as "B".
Set your modifier to "A". Set shield to "B" and Shield Bash to "A + B". We're going to set the dash key manually.
Start menu, run, type in "regedit". Confirm the permission window. Click File, Export, Select Export Range as HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JavaSoft\Prefs\projectx
This file will be your control scheme backup.
Create a copy of that file and edit it. Find "modifier_1.keys" and note the 3 numbers that appear, those relate to keyboard keys/gamepad buttons. Copy those three numbers into the "dodge.keys" entry. Remember that the three numbers are seperated by commas and the set of three is surrounded by two quotation marks (4 quotation marks per line/entry)
Now save the file, and run it. That should set it so Dash + Shield = Shield Bash. You'll need to restart Spiral Knights for it to take effect.
If it doesn't, edit the file again and add the number 268435456 (yes, we're doing math) to the left and middle number (if you're using gamepad I can't help you) of "dodge.keys". If the middle number is 0 then just leave it. This is the modifier number. This means the "Dash" key, will essentially be "Modifier + Modifier". Don't blame me if your control edit menu goes psycho when you open it :P
Remember every time you edit the registry file, you'll need to run it, and restart Spiral Knights for it to take effect. You can delete lines out of the file you don't need (a non existing line will be counted as "no change" to that line in the registry) so you can store your different control schemes in these registry files.

If nothing works you can use the backup to return to your original setup.

That makes sense, for the most part. I'll get around to it eventually.

The problem is if I changed my dash key, it sounds like I'd have to go and do that again.

Good to know I can actually test my suggestion though.

Nah, it was a pretty far-fetched idea to begin with.
