Is it bad that I plan to end up using gear that isn't overused?

Currently, I have an Ash Tail loadout, but I plan on making a loadout that's less overused.

Nope

It isn't. However, the gear that is "overused" is overused for a reason, it's because we have player established classes of swordies, gunners and bombermen. However there is specialist gear which looks awesome and has it's place. However the specialist gear's resists rarely match up with what is optimal thereby pushing people towards the overused ones.

Example:

Slimes:
Deadly virulisk suit gives damage v slimes med, resists normal, poison and piercing.
Skoalver coat gives Damage bonus with swords med, resists normal, freeze and piercing.

Slimes usually appear as non threats (except in danger rooms) in normal clockworks runs and are usually with other baddies.

Special levels with slimes are
RJP (normal + piercing + elemental)
C42 (normal + piercing + elemental + fire + poison)
URJP (Normal + piercing + elemental + freeze)

Skoalver does a better job in RJP for swordies and a better job in URJP resisting the variety.

C42 is the one exception and there drake scale outshines them both.

My suggestion is look at what you will be facing and plan accordingly. After getting your first 5* set and getting a few other pieces to make it all around, go wild and make whatever you want. Variety is key to being ready for anything.

agree

I encourage people to try unpopular equipment; it makes the game more interesting, and it's how we learn about new uses for obscure items. But, as Bella-Donna said, most of the popular equipment is popular because it's actually good.

Keep in mind that you can always wear a costume over your real armor.

Another idea is to make a good-but-popular set for your first set, so that you can farm Firestorm Citadel, danger missions, and other lucrative opportunities, to get money for more interesting equipment.
