Well, what about Vaelyn, then, hm? Is she a she-robot? Do spiral robots have genders?
Anyway, spiral knights are 47th century people with permanent but fragile mech-suits designed for keeping a Knight in top condition. That's what the armour's for.

But in all seriousness, the leading theory from back in my days was cyborgs. Biological lifeforms with cybernetic modifications. Definitely not human, though.
