I see a lot of people with Wolver gear, but the amount of people that wear it is not what I'm discussing
I joined a Firestorm Citadel lobby, and I didn't have Wolver gear, but this guy actually told me in a more imperative than advice-like way said "ink get wolver your gear sucks", and I said "No thanks. I'm encouraged to try unpopular gear.", and he said "we got a hipster on board".
Is this a bad thing that I don't have Wolver?
If slags deal shadow damage, why would you want a Vog Cub Coat to fight them?

I don't die in Firestorm Citadel. He didn't see me in action. He just straight forward told me to get Wolver.

No, what you do is ask them why they have divine avenger out when sudaruska (like the one I have) is better. If they are really uptight (like in the OP) then they will rage quit. Happened with me.

It is not bad at all to not have wolver gear. Sure, you may not get the job done quite as fast or be super-optimal, but that doesn't matter. If you like wearing stuff which is uncommon, then go ahead and do it. Games are about fun, not conforming to someone else's opinion.
If you want to always be in company of hipsters, you can join my guild, the Shard Squad. We are extremely welcoming, and we have basically no requirements. Well, except that we don't really like elitists like Mr-FSC-Wolver-Lobby-Person-That -Tries-To-Force-You-To-Get-The-Same-Gear-As-Him, like you mentioned in your original post.

Wolver is so popular because its no. 1: easily accesible (you can get one for about 2500 crowns at AH [last i checked]) no. 2: its got good piercing and normal damage(and a little bit of freeze resistantce)
It's because not everyone has caught up to the fact that everyone needs to have Chaos gear instead these days.

That's why I run Mad Bomber and Grey Feather. On my old account the only reason I made ANY Wolver gear was Skolver to survive URJP and UGW.
Well, that and Snarby because A. Shadow, and B. Dead sexy armor, there.
Wolver is definitely not bad by any means. The problem here isn't with the armour, it's with people trying to force other people to wear the same gear as them and insulting them if they don't. The reason there are so many varieties of armour is because people can wear all of them, not be restricted to one.
If you have to use wolver, at least have the decency to wear a costume over it. I won't deny it's a good set, but it's ugly and I'm sick of the CLONES everywhere.
Yep they're EVERYWHERE! Not to mention I am a Wolver Armour line user.

Just ignore them they can just go crazy running around, spamming the words "GET WOLVER!", and show him your skill (Not showoff) and let him know that even without wolver you can complete a fairly hard mission! (Im rank Defender Elite and I've struggled FSC, Obviously because my rank)
The clone tries to tell you that he/she lacks of skill: buffing weapons that are already OP. The next time when you want to run FSC, start the party so the clones won't be able to kick you. They want you to have their gear because their grandpa told them "wolvar iz da best" but, as Zeddy said, Chaos is outclassing every other gear now.

No. Shoot the Ghastard and walk away. Wear what you want, screw everyone else who says otherwise and don't let those Ghastards grind you down.
If you wearing something like Deadly Virulisk then listen to him. Well, you still need to get fire resist gear.
I was wearing Radiant Silvermail, and I was wearing an Azure Guardian Helmet.
You might say that I should listen to him, but I've been surviving in this gear. I survived longer than people with different gear variants a lot. I don't die unless it's by disconnection. I soloed levels before Vanaduke without any struggle.
I've been thinking of getting another helmet because Azure Guardian may not fit for Vanaduke, though.
If he wanted me to get improved gear, he could've said it in a way more advice-like way.
He didn't say "I think you should get Vog Cub to resist yourself from fire.". He said "GET WOLVER! YOUR GEAR SUCKS!".
I had an Ash Tail set, but I decided "You know what? I don't want to be a Vog Cub. I want to try a set that's less overused.", and this is the best set I could find.
I have a Dragon Scale Shield, and he said "your shield is mainstream so you're not using unpopular gear!".
Dragon Scale Shield is semi-popular because it looks badass.
Elite mode turned it into a pretty respectable all-around shield, where enemies deal very little normal damage anymore.
If anyone tells you to get Wolver again, you should absolutely switch to the 2* set, continue your FSC run, and watch the rage c:
Switch to fencing jacket, call everyone noobs for needing the extra health and normal defence provided by skolver coat.

I don't care about what the others wear as long as they kill and don't die. It's situational.
If I find you dead on the floor most of the time because slags rip your Royal Jelly set, then yes, I will tell you to make Vog or something more usual.
