Guns for a Swordsman

For a while, I have played the game mainly with swords, because of their damage output. However, I have seen other knights using guns that are very powerful and useful in both PvP and PvE. Recently, I had heard that the blitz needle is the weapon to use against Vanaduke, so I got myself a strike needle (I am a 4 star knight, with my only five star equip is the leviathan blade). I see the pulsar used very often, so I spent my bark modules and got one. Then I got an Antigua.

My questions are about which branches of the last weapon I should get. I thought a bout getting a Silversix, but I figured that I was going to get the Polaris eventually, so that would fulfill my elemental needs, and I have a strike needle so I do not need piercing. Now, I think that I should get a Blackhawk. Should I rethink the way I go about guns? Should I get a different shadow damage gun? Should I get all three Antigua lines? Thanks for reading, and I appreciate help.

So with that section in mind, you would generally want an elemental gun. Polaris is great as a sidearm. You didn't list any swords you currently use, only the Levi. Assuming you have a sword for all damage types, go for the Polaris and hold off on the antiguas. Due to the fact that they are acquired as boss token equipment, the recipes for them are rarer and thus require more effort to obtain.

Unless you are thinking about branching out as a full gunner. In which case, I think there's already a thread on that here.

Hello, I am a pure gunslinger that occasionally uses bombs so my recommendations might not meet your needs perfectly.
Elemental guns: There are three types of elemental guns, however I believe swords can do much more damage (and DA and brandish series are more powerful because of its reach on charge attacks.)
Polaris: I would not recommend this, especially with the new update, causing more popularity of arcade and exploring the clockworks. This weapon is not team friendly, and the knockback and bright flashing is very very disruptive to your team mates to the point that many Polaris users are kicked as soon as they join. It is a viable weapon, but I highly suggest you don't spam it everywhere and think about others when using it.
Argent Peacemaker: This is a perfectly good sidearm (meaning support not high DPS). This allows you to shoot while retreating and kite enemies before you finish them of with your main damaging weapon (in which case yours will be a sword). Also the charge attack is useless and gets you killed.
Alchemers: As a gunner, I believe that this is a great DPS weapon, because of its ricochets and charge attack. However, as a sword wielder you might find it lacking with only two bullets. I would recommend this to deal status damage and charge attack for a non-gunner. This is not so friendly in switch heavy levels and bomb block heavy levels because of its ricochets that can easily get you and your teammates killed. Also this weapon becomes much more stronger every time you upgrade it for its number of ricochets increase.

Piercing guns: There are only two piercing guns that are both extremely situational and root you only firing. My advice would be to get a piercing sword for fiends and wolvers in general.
Magnus: Don't get this if you aren't a pure gunner. Unless you are able to switch-shoot this, it will just get you killed.
Blitz needle: I suggest you get this for the King of Ashes mission, and Trojans, for this is a heavy DPS weapon. It can drain Lord Vanaduke's health and kill Trojans in one hit.

Shadow guns: There are three shadow weapons, but like elemental guns, they can be easily out damaged by swords.
Catalyzer: It is a unique and fun gun. It is like a sticky bomb launcher. The charge attack shoots an bullet that orbits an enemy that can be detonated with a normal shot. The bullets are slow like a pulsar's and are not so useful against gremlins. However, it is very useful against slow, non-dodging and clustering enemies (compound thingys). Inflicts poison
Sentenza: Same as Argent Peacemaker
Alchemer: Same as its elemental versions, does not deal status.

Normal guns: Normal damaging guns are very useful and handy.
Supernova: Same as Polaris
Valiance: Very handy that deals small knockback on all of its fast bullets. It is very handy while retreating, and is a great sidearm.
Neutralizer: Same as the shadow catalyzer. Unlike the shadow versions, it can be used against zombies, and are quitte effective against them.

Also there is only two Antigua lines: Elemental and Shadow, there are no piercing lines.

Wow...

I wrote a lot...
Be sure to READ everything I wrote, cause it is boring but informative, but could also be a little biased.

Merci Beaucoup

I do have a sword for every damage type: Silent Nightblade, Avenger, (I'm working on a grand flourish right now), and a Jalovec, so thanks. My main goal is to get a well-balanced arsenal where I can have weapons for nearly every situation. I got some advice from a guildie on what bombs would serve me well, so I'm on my way.

agree with Bopp

I agree with the link that Demonicsothe kindly posted. The obvious choice (but not the only reasonable choice) is an elemental gun. You can search Google for something like "spiral knights forum elemental gun" to learn more about them, but here's the short version:
* Argent Peacemaker: easy to use, decent damage, unsafe charge
* Polaris: easy to use, decent damage, high knockback; really a crowd-control weapon
* Nova Driver: harder to use, but higher damage in the hands of an expert
* Storm, Magma, Hail Drivers: like Nova, but trade a little damage for status
My personal recommendation is Storm or Nova, because they seem to be the most powerful. But many sworders choose Argent or Polaris, because they want something easy.

P.S. When people say "a sword for every damage type", they don't mean normal. So feel free to stop upgrading your Jalovec, unless you really enjoy it or something like that.

Honestly I would reccommend

Honestly I would reccommend AP or Polaris. Alchemers I wouldn't recommend because its better as a primary weapon than as a sidearm. Gunners can acheive a very high DPS with alchemers because of the charge and bouncing bullets. As a swordsman, I think you need a sidearm for when you need it or to kite monsters. You are not going to think about which side of the monstor you are going to shoot and you will he mainly using the gun's basic shots. Alchemers have great charges. But you will rather use the swords charge because you are a swordsman. Hope this helped.

Alchemers are great guns, but Polaris and AP/Sentenza are better sidearms than the alchemer. I don't really suggest you get a blitz until you get your first 5* set and can choose whatever to craft.

ricochets not really very hard to think about

You are not going to think about which side of the monstor you are going to shoot and you will he mainly using the gun's basic shots.

The ricochets on alchemer regular attacks are not really difficult, with auto-targeting off. If you can land all of the ricochets, then you will do 20%-40% more damage per second (DPS) than with Argent or Polaris (data). On the other hand, if you land very few of the ricochets, then you will do less DPS than with Argent or Polaris.

Basically, you're asking yourself this question: "Do I want to be mediocre and boring, but safe?" If so, then go with Argent or Polaris. But if you instead say, "No, I want to excel. I want to deliver impressive attacks that I can be proud of!", then go with an alchemer. It is totally reasonable for a novice player to go with the boring plan. Just don't be surprised if you come around to the exciting plan later.
