Latisan Sklay here of the Arsenal Podcast (talk radio about Spiral Knights – check it out if you haven't!!).

Over the next week (or as long as we can keep the discussion running), we'll be talking about the practical facets of Spiral Knights etiquette. In other words, how can you play Spiral Knights with good manners?

We will be gathering the information we are given and presenting it with our own thoughts on the next podcast. So here's how you might contribute to this discussion.

  • Share with us general tips that you believe make playing Spiral Knights or any game with other people a better place.
  • Give us specific situations where manners are questionable (i.e. who opens the locked energy gate?), and we'll decide with as much dry humor, sarcasm, and accuracy as possible what the best course of action is to take.
  • If you're feeling creative, make something cool – pneumonic (NASA, SK, BTB) which help you remember things, rhymes, etc. We think you people who do that are awesome.

And we'll see what happens! We as the hosts have some ideas already, but you guys are much smarter than we are. Show us what you got!

If a party member says something bad about you, kick them.

If a party member refuses to revive you with their sparks of life, kick them.

If a party member is lagging, kick them.

If a party member refuses to open all energy gates for you, kick them.

If a party member will not give you a sum of their money prior to getting on the elevator, kick them.

If a party member has to use the restroom or is being slow, kick them.

If a party member does not address you by your full and proper name, kick them.

If a party member does better than you, kick them.

If a party member argues about the other two members of the party being kicked, kick them.

If a party member is of a colour that you do not like, kick them.

If a party member is being too cheerful, kick them.

If a party member manages to stay in your party for more than fifteen minutes, kick them.

If a party member dislikes the use of anaphora, kick them.

If a party member goes against your whimsical political agenda within the game's development, kick them.

If a party member is green, kick them.

Green is NOT a creative color.

If a party member refuses to change into the costume you give them, kick them.

If a party member lags, kick them.

If a party member fails to have the coin you flip land on "heads", kick them.

If a party member is under sixteen years of age, kick them.

If a party member uses the number characters rather than spelling out all numbers, kick them.

If a party member is using a battle sprite that you are unfamiliar with, kick them.

If a party member is clean and unable to be kicked, send them a friend request and a guild invite along with 3 random materials and a wrench wand. This is to be their Indoctrination.

I'd join for the free costume, whatever it is.

You are experiencing a PICNIC ERROR!

Fehzor...this is loooool.

Lemme think...

  • When you have an excess of Sparks, revive others sometimes! While it's good to keep it within reasonable limits, I wouldn't be too stingy.
  • If your Battle Sprite can do it, cast its skills sometimes so that it helps others. (Heart Attack comes to mind.)
  • I usually tote around some spare Energy to unlock energy gates which have a decent amount of boxes inside, especially red ones. The whole team benefits, yay!
  • Trade food-for-food. Two of my friends friends have Seraphynx and Maskeraith, while I have Drakon. We give each other food whenever we have the minerals to do it. It goes faster that way!

Taking the first letters of Skills, Energy (gates), Life (sparks), and Food, that's SELF.

Another would kicking misgeared people, meaning those who don't have all the optimal gear but are still in your tier. Maybe they're in a party so that they can go to that level? :P

Oh oh, you want questions? Okay, here we go:

You have just one Spark of Life, while your friend has none. You are both equally well equipped for the situation, and you both died. Who do you revive?

It's a Concrete Jungle out there

-If a party member is frozen or shocked, defend them from attack. Doubly so if there's Lumbers about- Shield Bumping is your friend. (Alternatively, break them out if you have a sword.)

-If a party member mentions My Little Pony, it is not necessary to kick them. It is, however, necessary to point out after the battle that they might still have their emergency revive if they'd just saved their opinion of Princess Celestia for AFTER the Lichens were dead.

-If a party member is using a haze bomb, consider STOPPING THE POLARIS SPAM SO THE ENEMY CAN BE AFFECTED BY THE STATUS. ARGH.

-On Arena levels, if you have a Toxic Vaporizer bomb, bring a Toxic Vaporizer bomb. (The exception, of course, being Poison arenas. Bring a Fire or Freeze bomb to them.)

-If a party member gets a reference you make, /clap or /cheer.

-If you off an enemy far away from your party, tell your party. (Alternatively, stay the **** together.)

-If a party member does /epicfail or /fail every time you're hit, you're entitled to /epicfail yourself when the guy gets "typefragged" (killed while typing).

-If a party member has to use the bathroom, you can wait the TEN FREAKING MINUTES it'll take them to empty their waste.

-There are times to Polaris spam and times not to Polaris spam. If you're surrounded by spikes in an enclosed space and melee mobs are approaching, fire away. If a Trojan is frozen and a party member is circling around with a charged blitz, you should probably hold your fire.

-If you have plenty of sparks and can manage to click through the menus with out getting destructinated, revive your teammates. This'll make them happy, and happy teammates are the BEST at slaughtering zombie hordes!

-If someone opens a danger room door, MAN UP AND GO IN THAT DANGER ROOM, PRIVATE! Do I have to TELL YOU TWICE? ARE YOU TRYING FOR A SECTION EIGHT?!

-If your weapon is lagging someone's computer, and you have another weapon that can work just as well in your situation, use the other weapon. Nobody likes lag.

-If your teammate is lagging, be considerate, and don't shield bump enemies toward them like a [REDACTED].
--If you do that, pay for their revive. Even if you DON'T have Sparks of Life.

-Given the choice between a small deposit for your sprite's Mineral and a large or shiny deposit for another sprite's Mineral, choose the latter. It makes people feel good.

Manners can go pogo jump off a cliff.

What do I think is good manners? being a tool.
manners are stupid. The only thing you should care about is treating them well, not treating them with a guide book.
No 2 people have the same idea of "manners" unless they are the same person or think that manners is stupid.
If you stop focusing on the rules to fallow and focus on just over all treating them well you will make them and your self feel better by the end of it.
pleasure and comfort ability of those who deserve it > guide lines that make you look like a stiff of the heard

If you talk about how we as knights treat our selves and see our selves as heroes while we invade and mine away this planet with a strangely beautify odd world to the core and then some I'll start watchin.

When to kick:
Crippling lag (the phrase "come on dude, we've been waiting for you on the party button for ten minutes" should never be uttered. If you're the one lagging, leave).
Willful stupidity (Yes, the super slime smasher has bonus damage vs slimes. No, that doesn't mean you can or should fight the Royal Jelly with it).
Griefing (Espeically the guy who "accidentally" shoots bomb blocks or bashes mobs into you every time)

When not to kick:
Anytime something happens that isn't one of the above.

General:
Be aware of what direction a knockback will send a mob. The only thing worse then a T3 Mecha knight is a T3 Mecha Knight being flung toward your face after someone starts nitrospaming.

Know enough about other classes (swordie, bomber, gunslinger, ect) and sprites to prevent you from messing up something that they're trying to do. For example, don't nitrospam when a group of gunslingers are around, and don't knock enemies out of the blast radius of status bombs.

Building on the above two (and Drspacebar's comments), know when to spam and when not to. Protip: The answer is "not often, and only with the right weapon."

If some is using the maskeraith cloak to run away and hide (instead of repositioning to take out a key target), you are allowed to hire goons to hunt them down and break their legs.

Get a green personal color. Then hang around Fehzor.

Guilds:

Donate to your guild. Expansions and updates don't pay for themselves.

Get involved. Hang out with members, use the guild chat, plan (or suggest) guild events, ect. A Guild is supposed to be a community, not a bunch of guys with the same name above their head.

ALWAYS TAKE MINERALS. I don't care if your sprite's level 100, or if all you see is moonstone, MINERALS ARE SHARED. If you don't take a mineral, the whole PARTY gets screwed out of it, and whether you "need" it or not, its FREE MONEY for NO WORK.

Fan poem by me :D Include maybe? ;)

Latisan Sklay's podcasts are dying :(
Although they are very Interesting.

I wish they carry on,
Rather than mowing the lawn.

If it did carry on,
Here's something I have done.

A poem that you're reading,
Five words on each lining.

Yay! I hope Latisan and friends will include this fan poem in their next podcast :3

Building on what other have

Building on what other have stated about minerals....

Don't get Valestone if you can get something else. Don't get Moonstone, either. And whatever you do, don't deposit either in gates. Yes, there's the hoarding factor of crafting Wild/Cosmic food to get rich quick, and that's fine. But there's no excuse at all for depositing them in gates, because that's what everyone else is doing, which means that you're being paid a pittance even when using Auto Sell. Get Crimsonite, Luminite, or Dark Matter and deposit what you don't need in Freeze strata. Or, if you're a scumbag and like the idea of the Clockworks seizing up from the cold, craft sprite food and get rich. Just don't get blue and green and make the problem worse.

Got a few more

Unless someone's gear is grossly inadequate (like the guy who tries to use a slime smasher on the Royal Jelly), don't bug or insult people because of their gear choices. Instead, ask why they choose what they did, you just might learn something.

Dashing or shield bashing from one side of the elevator to the other in order to advance to the next level isn't clever or funny if you do it every single bloody time, especially not if you spend even more time positioning to get in exactly the right spot (thus wasting everyone's time and wearing their patience thin).

Offering to pay a portion

Offering to pay a portion (even if it's like 300E) Of a shadow key's costs.
The person with the key had to get it for 1800E, so the least they can do is to at least help out a little.

I think I... Uh... I agree with Waffleconecake.

Although it's nice you state some instances of showing good manners, the better way would be trying to focus on treating them well instead in your own ways.

The previous posts covered a

The previous posts covered a lot of things that I could think up of but I thought I'd still throw in my own opinion.

I personally think that etiquette in this game is rather circumstantial. The 'right thing to do' will most likely vary on a case-by-case basis (the place, the goal that you want to accomplish, the people in your party, their level of experience, the amount of free time they have, their playstyle, etc.).

Sometimes, if you're going to be running with certain people for an extended period of time, it helps to ask other players what their preferences and what they feel most comfortable with - you can learn a lot from others. When it comes to how to treat others, think about how you would like to be treated and do just that (unless you actually enjoy suffering, in which case, don't hurt others xD ). A level of mutual understanding and cooperation might be all that you need to succeed.
