More specifically, shield status resists.

Because, I need to know, if a shield, just for example, has a shadow status resist, does that resist always stay in effect, or only when you're defending? Thanks for the help.

That was my inclination, but

That was my inclination, but I wanted to be sure before making gear decisions.

Thank you.

Shadow is a type not a status.

read "Shield" and "Shieldbearer Guide"

Read the wiki articles "Shield" and "Shieldbearer Guide", to learn how shields work. The short version is:

Your shield's damage and status resistances protect it, not you. They increase the amount of damage and status that the shield can absorb, before breaking.
