Is it still possible? The little checkbox thing isn't there anymore, and I'm tired of holding down 1 key the entire time

The checkbox is in a different pane of your preferences. You can still shut it off. Find it.
Edit: It's in the "Game" tab now.

Don't forget
The backspace key removes key bindings and sets current edit to none.
I just set the key I use for it to caps, so I can have it on or off without having to hold it down. Have to make sure that it's off before you chat though, which can be a little annoying.
