Greetings, spiral knights community. This is my first post here in the forums (I'm a shy one), and it's about something that's been troubling me since I started playing. I play on a fairly weak laptop: I somewhat lag when more people and more visual effects are on screen, and I take longer to load than most other party members. That is not a problem, and I've grown used to it. My problem is, whenever I play Spiral Knights for a while (usually at least 1 or 2 hours), my game ends up crashing. Well, I guess "crashing" isn't the right term. It freezes. If I try calling the task manager to kill Java.exe, the process will behave like a zombie process (won't let itself be killed and won't disappear), which forces me to logoff everytime this happens. This is borderline annoying to me, but I've grown used to the quirks of having a bad computer, and usually I could log off fast enough and come back in time to not be ejected from my current dungeon, or at least, come back to the game. But lately, not even that has been allowed to me: everytime I try coming back after such thing happens, the game prevents me from returning, just freezing on login (at least I can kill java.exe...). Trying to login, kill java.exe and trying again doesn't seem to help matters; I have to stay around 15-30mins without trying to login to be able to return to the game (not sure of exact time). I've been having this "zombie java" problem since I started playing (January, even though I took a LOOOOOOOONG break till around the end of july, where I started a new character) and I'd like to know possible solutions, or if someone else has this problem.

I apologize for the wall of text. Any requests about more info, let me know on the replies (and preferentially provide the steps to get that info :P ). If I had to guess by myself, I'd say Spiral Knights has some memory leak (since my game only gets like that after an hour or two of playing), but either way, any help will be appreciated :)

Small bump, just wanted to

Small bump, just wanted to add that, since disabling steam overlay, the problem has been occurring less often (but still occurs...)

Greetings,

If disabling the Steam Overlay solved your problem it's very likely that the graphics driver is causing an incompatibility between Spiral Knights and Steam. This tends to be most common on older Intel Integrated Graphics solutions. When using this hardware it's very important that you have the latest driver from Intel's Download Center installed and running to help provide the best performance possible. If the currently installed driver blocks installation you can follow these steps on the Wiki to get around it.

Thanks for the reply, Admin Helios

As I said, disabling the overlay only helped preventing the issue, but it still happens on some situations. I've noticed that, when I'm running more programs, this tends to happen more often; on the other hand, it happens very rarely when Spiral Knights is the only demanding program running. What I believe is happening is: I believe that Spiral Knights demands more and more RAM over time (to a certain cap). Steam Overlay demands extra RAM on top of that, and I guess that in my situation, it makes Spiral Knights reach a point where no more RAM is available, crashing it.

Well, again, thanks for the reply, Admin Helios. At the very least, maybe you can take my problem as a bug and use it for improvements? :) (Running out of memory may result in a game crash which also makes java turn into a zombie proccess). And maybe you guys can take a look at the "after crashing not being able to come back for a long time" thing, if possible? :)

Greetings,

As with almost any program, if Spiral Knights tries to address physical memory that isn't available you're going to have a problem. Usually the game crashes. Please make sure that you have at least 512MB RAM free for Spiral Knights to use. Ideally you'll want to have around 800MB free so the game can stretch its legs, so to speak.

Also, if you think there is something else going on please try submitting bug reports once you get the game running again after it crashes on you. If you submit the report soon after you start the game again the event that caused the crash can sometimes still be captured. Bug reports can be made in game by pressing F2 or by using the /bug command.
