So the time remaining on an auction. The wiki says:
"Very Short": less than 5 minutes (time is extended with every new bid)
"Short": 5 minutes - 1 hour
"Medium": 1 - 4 hours
"Long": 4 - 24 hours
"Very Long": 24+ hours
Which doesn't narrow things down much at all. Why not simply have a timer?

Perhaps...

I would say make the timer(s) only viewable from items you bid on, as scrolling through a list of auctions with times on them would be a bit of a drag. Not to mention, having multiple of those at different times can become quite confusing, and even misleading, as someone could mistake the time of an item above for another, based off of how bunched up they could be.

yes,no-maybe?

while this could be useful i see full on bidding fights and rage happening because someone wants to %*&^ with your bid. in other words it is a good idea that will be ultimately used for evil.

well I think something should

well I think something should be done. An example to illustrate my point:
After playing for a while, I'm aware that I have to leave for work soon and I can't really do another run of fsc. So I check the AH. I see an auction for an item I really want. The time remaining is "Long". That's between 4-24 hours. The bid is already quite high. I'd like to wait so the price doesn't go too high, but I have no idea if the auction will still be up when I get back from work, so I'm forced to bid early.

Yes!

I've been thinking that actual times would be much better for a long time. I don't understand why it's so vague and actually needs the wiki to tell a player what it means.

Cyberpony, there are already numbers above each other; prices. If you don't look right, you can confuse them too. Once you click on something you get it highlighted nicely. (That at least hasn't become hard to spot, unlike your own stuff's highlighting, as of new UI.)

Chiefofrice, I don't see what bad it could be used for, your example isn't very clear.

But I don't think the timer should show for all items by default. Only the items on "your bids" should show the timer.

not so great

i kinda like it not having an exact timer, because it forces people to be more observant and dedicated to the AH. Also, as chief said the timer will be misused by players to mess with other bids, or even have every1 bid on a single item at once at the last second, not only greatly increasing the price but the time as well, just to have it start all over again once it hits 1-2 seconds. AH bid wars are not meant for the feint of heart that just want to bid now and wait until you win like you suggested. You have to be dedicated to the bid, and putting a timer on it kinda takes the fun out of it.

We should have another tier by splitting 'long' in 2. The gap between 4 and 24 is indeed too big.

Blaackblue, you don't decide what's fun for me, none of your arguments apply to me. You simply have no say in what I should or shouldn't do.

Forcing people to do something is a terrible idea, in my never humble opinion. That takes the fun out of it for me.

If you don't like a timer, ask for it to be an option. You're welcome to keep the vague all for yourself.

You're not warning of anything that can't be done already.

You don't decide what bid wars are meant for, or what anyone has to be dedicated to.

Do try to learn to spell 'in my opinion'.

@Chiefofrice He suggested a timer, not an AH chatroom.
+1 to Cyberpony.
