The lag is out of hand now. We need a new server.

As many of the players near the West Coast will agree, the lag is getting worse and worse by the day. There needs to be a change as many players are quitting because the game is no longer enjoyable for them, as it's impossible to play Lockdown to do a Vana run without getting pulled back to the location you were at 5 seconds ago, then get instakilled. Most people in the Mid-US to the East Coast have 4 bar connections and will ignore this thread, but those near the West Coast, Alaska, Northeastern Canada, Mexico/Latin America, Asia, Australia, and South America will agree, that the lag is out of hand. (Unless you have the godly 1 bar that lets you glitch around). As far as I know, the server is in Richmond, Virginia, across the US from West Coast and extremely far away from these places. Most people in these regions have 1-2 bar connections and around 300-400 ping, even with good internet. If the server was moved, upgraded, or perhaps both, there could be a change and a few of these countries could get 2-3 bars if the server is placed correctly and has a strong enough signal output where it can reach them without too much strain on it. Right now there are over 4,000,000 knights, some are alt accounts, some are daily players, regardless, two servers is NOT enough to handle all these players. If you even made smaller servers around the world for specific areas that we could connect to, it would be great, because getting a 1 bar connection from both servers is really annoying, and I know a majority of the people I'm aiming at have this problem.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma0WIrZzzOM I recorded this recently to show how terrible the lag was in Lockdown, and fortunately for me, my mic config was changed so you can't really hear my commentary on the lag. I already talked to the GM's about this, and they told me to lower my settings to reduce lag, which has NOTHING to do with the connection to the server. If I can record SK with 45 fps, I think I should have a 4 bar according to their instructions. Please, for your own benefit and enjoyment of the game, send this thread around and +1 it, maybe OOO will make a change in the server and finally do something about their server.

Thanks for reading :)

1) Fix your internet connection. If you're lagging, it must be your connection.

2) What kind of "change" to the server? All they need to do is upgrade the server.

Trust me, my internet is great, and if 60 down 35 up isn't enough for the server, I don't know what is.

Thanks for the +1 :)

I live in the midwest and still get random lag spikes despite showing a 4 bar connection.

I live on the east coast and even though my lag might be here and there, I fully support this thread. I know its a pain in the arse to deal with this.

I'll tell you right now, it's not the servers. As in, I've talked with the GMs, and they've said it's not the servers. The distribution of those servers may be lacking for those outside of the US, but the servers themselves are handling the load quite well. (I don't feel comfortable discussing the topic in further detail, though. Not without Eurydice or whoever coming in and saying it's OK.) Spiral Knights' netcode apparently just fails spectacularly when dealing with any situation other than "server in one room, client in the next room." Get on that, Helios.

OOO won't gain profit from updating their terrible servers. They want more people to join from nowhere with Steam being their only advertisement.

If the server is better, the word gets around about the quality of the game and people aren't just joining for the TF2 hat, and if they enjoy the game, they'll play more and tell their friends, then the chain reaction occurs. They'll buy Energy from the Supply Depot to finally afford that illusive accessory, and show it off to their friends who will spend even MORE money to get a better one, and so on.

Never question my logic!

Btw, I'm pretty sure they have enough money to make a new server or upgrade the current one greatly. Seriously, they have Sega on their side and people who spend nearly thousands of dollars on this game.

Also, thanks for all the support, I really feel like if enough people +1 this, then OOO will upgrade the server just a little, which can make a huge difference.

FiOS, 35/35, 4 bars, east coast US, 15ms ping to the SK server area. And yet, since the Sprite update, Lockdown in particular has started lagging all over the place for me. The CW too, but not as much... It feels like server stress, but apparently it's not?

It's like Warp-Master said: "Spiral Knights' netcode apparently just fails spectacularly when dealing with any situation other than "server in one room, client in the next room.""

I also believe that because I'm on Europe and I've played Minecraft, Terraria, WoW and other online games on US servers and I very rarely had the king of lag that SK sometimes puts me through. Do note how the connection thingy in the corner shows that I have 4 bars when I'm obviously far from it. Dunno if that's easy to fix though, to show our connection accurately.

I actually have a decent connection on PvE (or I'm just used to it by now), but PvP is just a lagfest of me getting hit while seemingly being out of their weapons' range.

In shorter terms: I really hope OOO will consider fixing the game's netcode soon, at least if they don't plan on replacing/upgrading their current servers.

I like how whenever someone posts about lag the first post is ALWAYS:

"Omg,lol, ur conction bad fx it ur falt."

And people can't think that for once it is not the player but the server.

Anyway, +1
I am lucky if I get 2 bars once per month.

There's already a server somewhere in north america. So yes, west coas players should honestly shut up.

If anything, we need a new server around brazil for all south america (brazil just happens to be in the middle).
Our lag issues are worse than yours :P

Wow, Juances, that post came out pretty... mean, since I can't use more colourful language. If you want to go by that logic, though, OOO should worry themselves with an Australian/Asian server first. Their lag issues are worse than yours :P

Still, it would probably be cheaper (I guess?) if OOO reworked the game's netcode. It wouldn't fix the issue but it would be a start...

I understand that the lag in other countries is bad too, but the server is at the Coast of the USA, making half of the possible 4 bar connection zone useless as it's in the ocean. If it's moved, or even upgraded by a great deal, then the lag in Southern/Middle American countries will be reduced as well due to its' expanded area of possible 4 bars. Hell, even a 3 bar is fine, just do something about the lag already OOO.

What SK needs is a popular meme...

That would really get lots of people joining.

"What dark ritual?"

Anyone got others?

Don't do that.

If you wanna do that, make a forum post about it, I don't want this thread getting off topic, and I want the GM's to see this. I've already talked to them and everything I've said has nothing to do with my computer, but they still blame my computer.

If I can record 11 minutes of LD lag with 60 fps, I don't think my computer is the problem with my connection, and neither is my internet.

Or they could, you know. Have advertisements or make the game more appealing.

Popularity isn't always good ya know.

I live in australia and I've only seen a 2 bar 3,4 times in 700+ hours of play, even though my internet speeds in the top 2% by country. Though I doubt OOO will add servers around the world since they're a branch of a big company (Sega) which probably can't be bothered to put in money into setting up servers which aren't going to be used much any ways.

@Glacies when spiral knights just got started they put ads up everywhere, but most people just ignored them, word of mouth/hype is always better then advertising
