Freeze rebalance

Chart over statuses.

It's a widely known fact that freeze resistance on armour, aside from the occasional immunity, is a joke. Part of this lies in the fact that half of freeze' effect is lost on knights, namely the thawing damage. I don't suggest you re-introduce this mechanic, as it was ill-thought of in the first place. Instead, remove that thing entirely and replace with a different aspect: Hardness.

Currently, freeze lasts for about 4 seconds at minimum strength (Shivermist buster vs full Snarbolax) and about 9 seconds at full strength (Glacius vs Chaos). 4 seconds is really too long for something one is wearing specialized armour against. It might just barely help one dodge a single Silversap or escape between cooldowns of an ice trap. Barely. In addition, there's no problem going Chaos because anyone on your team can free you with a single hit. This is where hardness comes into play.

With this suggestion, freeze is no longer automatically broken in a single hit. Instead, hitting a frozen enemy or teammate reduces the duration of the freeze by a certain amount. The harder the freeze, the less this reduction counts for. I suggest numbers that look a little bit like this:

-6 strength freeze (Shivermist vs full Snarbolax): 2.4 second duration, 6 second reduction per hit
0 strength freeze (Shivermist vs most things): 4.8 second duration, 4.8 second reduction per hit
2 strength freeze (Hail Driver vs most things): 5.6 second duration, 4.4 second reduction per hit
4 strength freeze (Glacius and most enemies vs most things): 6.8 second duration, 3.8 second reduction per hit
8 strength freeze (Glacius and most enemies vs Chaos): 10 second duration, 2.2 second reduction per hit

The actual numbers in question are up for debate, of course, but you get the general idea. The change would apply to both monsters and players. With this change, players would be able to break loose their teammates in LD as well.

What this would achieve:

  • Freeze defence matters now. Wearing a full freeze set will in practice cut time spent frozen to almost 1/3. It will also reduce the amount of hits needed to be freed from 2 to 1.
  • Hail Driver will no longer instantly break its own freeze. A quick gunslinger could keep a target perpetually frozen, as could a lucky Cold Snap bomber.
  • Seeing a freeze-themed level will no longer make me go "lol, time for Chaos". Getting frozen in Chaos is a severe disadvantage that can no longer be simply bypassed by shielding a single hit. This brings it in line with the other statuses, which are all very dangerous when hitting a Chaos user.

Yes and no

I love this idea because it gives the meaning to wear freeze defense. Although OOO will never see this once it goes I suppose 5th page.

No because we have a TRUCKLOAD of freeze themed levels in the clockworks. I suggest this only happens once the "blizzard" clears up.

See it the other way around. If freeze suddenly became serious, people would stop dumping minerals and the blizzard would end right now.

Truth is, people like me

Truth is, people like me needs the lunamite, crimsonite, and dark matter for our battle sprites. Posion and freeze themed levels are no fun for me. My only good elemental defense has slight freeze weakness. Only elemental defense and freeze defense is the blizzbreaker and below. But THAT stops at 3*.

The idea is good, and the winder wonderland in the arcade calls for this.
I have a BKC and a snarby suit and if I get hit by a silversap on solo once, I am dead.
Freeze is broken on some occations like when caught in a freeze trap with no enemies or friends around.
By the way, is TOTAL freeze imunity possible?

Yes. Another reason that people keep throwing in moonstone is because Freeze isn't that bad.

Total freeze immunity isn't, well, possible.

Tossing out ideas here

Will cold snapping again add duration? And why are people unfrozen when their shield blocks the ice from bring shattered?

@Ellthan-Cosmolion

No, but with +11 resistance you're immune to Silversap freeze.

@Kathrine-Dragon
Additional freeze inflictions would only refresh the duration to the value of the strength, just like all other statuses work. In principle, I think letting shielded hits break freeze is a fine mechanic as it brings some agency into a status that's all about taking control away from the player, which I think is important in an action game. If you can shield 3 enemy hits while wearing Chaos, you're good to go. An incentive to not just bring Swiftstrike everywhere, perhaps.

Sounds like a good idea. Has freeze resist always been considered to be worthless, or is this something that's only come up when the blizzard hit?

On a mostly-related note, I find it hilarious that we fought so hard to stop Maulos from freezing the clockworks, only to do it ourselves once the sprite update hit.

Freeze has always been considered worthless, but since the clockworks were largely shock/fiend, nobody cared.

That is a humorous observation, though.

About this "spring that never comes"...

Still kinda half expecting to find Yuyuko trying to open the core using all the lost spirits she stole.
Kinda reminds me of Maulos in that regard. Except she's causing a winter by gathering "warm" spirits while Maulos is causing a winter by releasing "cold" ones.

Battle have you seen the arcade? It is obvious Maulos is still freezing the clockwork.

The only question is... Who is poisoning the clockwork? O_O

It's obviously Herex, he has compound 42, and that has fire and poison themed levels

@Zeddy
Very Good Idea, but wouldn't more people go for Wolver set as it has freeze resistence?

The clockworks.

Seriously. The minerals idea is cool, yet trolltastic. All those mineral dumps. And most of the people dumping the minerals play missions. Hey, ya know what I should do? Save up and dump only purple and yellow crystals.
