What is the reason for withholding information regarding how damage and defense work in the game, both PVE and PVP?

The mystery (and inaccuracies behind the stat tooltips) only serve to mislead players, as if the game is tricking them into thinking something is good when it is not.

We want numbers, from the source. Rigging up experiments and testing things for information that should be readily available is expensive, frustrating, and just downright annoying.

once equips had numerical values. but bars looked cooler and also they can be tweaked without us knowing (right away).
also do you really think that it's important to know how defense works if you don't see the damage dealt to you? is it important to know how many bites of wolvers will kill you if the point of the game is avoiding being hit? and who is "we"? I'm perfectly fine not knowing damage numbers and tables. I only need them for comparison with other weapons, and even then now I have a GTH.

Confusion.

@Thunder-The-Bright

While it is true that I don't really need to see the exact numbers and dynamics, I would like to compare armor reliably. I was doing some counts in another thread for comparing chaos with other armor types. In stratum 6 areas, a chaos set is much closer to the 0* starter gear than you may think (besides the hp bonus). Tack on 2 trinkets (element high and normal high) onto the chaos set, and it starts getting a massive 40-50% increase in damage reduction.
As of right now, it looks like chaos is pretty darn close in damage resistance to arcane sally. Testing shows horribly otherwise (that same 40-50% reduction difference).

@Momofuku
I don't think they need to go as far as giving us the numbers. It is possible that most of the discrepancies are from outdated tooltips (*cough GF cough*). The only major one that I've run into was chaos, which seems like it may have not been updated due to a nerf in resistance when it got the power boost. Are there other armor sets that are confusing (besides Black Kat Cowl, which is in the same boat as chaos)?

That being said, it is still fairly deceiving in its current state for some of the most preferred gear. Also, PvP is a whole new level of the deceiving story. Hybriding your armor pretty much yields you defenseless. There should be a more clear way of showing this without revealing the damage equations (After reading some of the study threads: they are not straightforward or easy to understand and would probably cause more confusion over understanding).

+1 for OP.

Doesn't need to be a change in UI, but data on the wiki and an explanation about HOW exactly defense works in PvE/PvP is much needed.

I'd like to have that one old mechanic back, yes. And these bars are just ugly. I would clean a toilet with them.
