I have the same problem. I see a java.exe running in my task manager when I try to play, but I don't see a window.

did you play from here? http://www.spiralknights.com/play.xhtml
you need to update java first and you have to wait longer to be able to play there... i recommended you just download it instead of playing there with short time and too laggy play there in website.
but risky because you don't know if you can play it or your pc not meet requirement to play it

I've downloaded it, tried the browser version and the steam version, however they all do the same thing. The verify java site says I have the latest version.

your program get blocked
maybe your firewall block it?
try this.. start > control panel > windows firewall > allowed programs > add java
if still nothing happen.. try run as administrator by right click and click run as administrator

maybe your antivirus block it? or other program?
and have you checked your system requirement to play sk?
or maybe you want to post your pc component here by click start > write dxdiag at search > operating system-processor-memory-directX-graphic card. maybe video driver might be related to how it operate your sk client and not only to make game run faster~
but i bet this problem happen because some program block your sk client.
Did you update your java?
