Game crashes. Windows Task Manager can't kill the process.

I've been suffering from this problem for as long as I've been playing the game but it's only recently that it's become more frequent (and grated on my nerves more).

Randomly during gameplay, my game will freeze then (Not Responding). I could just be standing around Haven, my Guild Hall or in a dungeon. "Java.exe *32" won't kill with Windows Task Manager and Steam won't let me run another game app, so I have to restart. If I log off then back on, the game will crash at -exactly- the same time. If I kill Steam then reopen it, it recognises the dead client as one in-session so it still says "Failed to open app" because the game's still running.

I've uninstalled SK, uninstalled Java, reinstalled Java, reinstalled SK and opened ports on my Firewall but, no dice. I've mailed OOO about this before but I just got told to read the FAQ on the Spiral Knights Wiki for solutions, but they were just telling me to do what I'd already done and didn't work.

I'm kind of at my wits-end, I'm getting tired of restarting my laptop because of this.

Lag isn't the issue, game runs fine most of the time. It's the crashing I have an issue with.

Well, here's my specs anyway;

Windows 7 Home Premium
Celeron(r) Dual-Core CPU T3000 @ 1.80Ghz
3072MB RAM
Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family

Unfortunately we can't always get things right on the first reply, but if you reply with more information we'll be able to better troubleshoot the problem.

My request ticket was a while ago, would it even be valid? And I'm not even sure I still have it (I purge my inbox every so often). But I did respond to the e-mail that suggested I look at the FAQ, though I didn't get a response back.

Greetings,

Even if your last reply was a few months ago the system is very good about picking up old cases without missing a beat. The added advantage of replying to the old mail is that it also makes it clear what you've tried and isn't working. If you include items like attached log files and computer specifications we can work even faster.

You are experiencing a lock. There are certain situations where task manager, even the command console can't kill the task, because the task has been locked. Viruses usually use this flaw in Windows OS to cause trouble.

If your file is locked, the main thing to do is force a shut down, otherwise, try getting the free application LockHunter to help you stop files that are locked.

your graphic card problem

@Helios' greeting sir 0,0

@misty' you using standard intel card, intel integrated card on laptop are definitively not meant for gaming because they have lower clock rate and small amount of video memory, you won't be able to run most game without lag or freeze.
if you can play it before without freeze or too much lag spike... try run on low setting or trying all option in game esc > video > video advanced, and try to disable program in your laptop that might consume lot of memory or defragment some file' try this program' google > tune up utilities

I'm sure you've tried this already but you'll likely want to set your graphics settings to Compatibility Mode (ESC > Video > Edit Advanced > Compatibility Mode) but it likely won't solve the problem, only delay it.

The next time you are able to trigger the crash, check what Task Manager says regarding your resources (CPU, Memory) and see if you notice if they are maxing out at some point (ie. using 100% CPU load or maxed out on free RAM).

My biggest suspicion, like others have pointed out, is your weak graphics card and possibly the Celeron CPU.

Tools I'd recommend if you want to try and self diagnose some more: jconsole, GPU-Z

I think I've had a similar

I think I've had a similar issue as you, Misty-Wellington. After a long period of playing I have sometimes crashed and could not close the application. It gave an unusual termination popup and seemed to do nothing. I assumed it was due to excessive RAM use because it was at 1,000,000+ bytes. I ended up ending the program by restarting my computer.

(This has only happened to me once but the second time I'll do something about it.)

I have one question though, does the Steam version of Spiral Knights run in x64? I've got 64-bit Java and Steam.
Nevermind. I know the answer.

Just to be sure it uses 32-bit. Even if you have 64-bit Java installed Spiral Knights uses its own Java in the Steam install folder which never gets updated unless you do it manually.
