Make a controller mode HUD

Currently, it's quite awkward to play the game with a controller, not counting the menus. (Which only half work, anyway.)

What I'm mostly talking about the item belt (pills, vials, barriers, etc.) and sprite actions. They are currently aligned in a row, perfect for using the number keys...but it's not so easy when you, say, assign them to a D-pad. Then you have to remember what is where on the pad and it's easy to make mistakes.

So what I suggest for this controller mode is that the item belt and/or the sprite actions would be arranged on in a plus-shape. It would either go under the game tab or the controls tab within the ESC menu. There would probably be a check box for both sets of actions, so that players who map their belt to the D-pad and then the sprites to other things wouldn't have to have a plus-shaped set of sprite actions. (Personally, I would put the Sprite actions on the D-pad, and then the items would go to Modifier+D-pad.)

Also, an option to modify/customize the UI entirely would be lovely.

I felt the exact same way last time I tinkered with a gamepad, wishing that there was a controller variant of the hud.
Perhaps it might be time for a controller overhaul soon, if Steam on your TV becomes significant enough to justify it.

This, personally, is my controller layout. I use a DualShock 3 controller:
Move N/S/E/W: Left Stick
Face N/S/E/W: Right Stick/Left Stick (for that Zelda feel)
Action: R1
Shield: R2
Sprite Action
1: X
2: Circle
3: Triangle
Dash: L3
Shield Bash: R3
Next Weapon: L1
Toggle AT: L2
Item Slot
1: D-pad Up
2: D-pad Left
3: D-pad Down
4: D-pad Right
I play PS3 games a lot, as well as play SK with these controls, so I've actually gotten used to these. I can't guarantee the same for you, so that's still a problem.

You are experiencing a PICNIC ERROR!

Oh, by the way, I haven't played SK for a long time with the gamepad because my current one broke. :(

I will be getting a replacement soon.

I want to look at OOO's suggested layout, though...I wonder what it looks like. :P

I play with a game pad, you can arrange everything perfectly using the custom controls option.
Eventually you memorize the gamepad rather than looking on screen for what you're doing with it.

Gamepad users are such a small minority anyway I don't think catering to them is high on the list of things to do either.
If you'd like my layout let me know though.
