All good things are worth paying for my friend :). I use Fraps, and it's pretty good.

on a Mac

What kind of computer do you have? If you have a Mac, then you can record the screen as a video whenever you want using the built-in QuickTime Player. By default this does not include audio for some reason. You can capture audio in your video by connecting your computer's headphone (audio out) jack to its microphone (audio in) jack.

^^^ best post

I use OBS to record, it's fairly simple to set up and once it is set up you can literally upload video files direct to youtube as they are compressed as you record. Much more straightforward than fraps' 1gb/30sec video files.

Of course if you want to be really professional then you can use a non-compressing software and do the compression yourself through video editing software like sony vegas etc, but from the sounds of it you are starting out much like myseld and OBS is certainly a good program to use.

In the settings, make sure you make your maximum bitrate about 8000, it seems like that's the maximum you'll need for decent quality.

Set the quality balance depending on how long you want to stay uploading. 10 makes the video maximum quality which could lead to huge upload times, while 0 makes videos very compressed but the quality of picture takes a massive hit. I use a balance of 7 most of the time, it compresses it enough to make upload times reasonable but not so much that there is a really noticeable drop in quality.

If you need any more help with setting up OBS then you can mail me in-game at Drachronos and I will do my best to help you.

Well, I personally record with Fraps and edit/encode in Adobe Premiere Pro. I find it to be really handy but Fraps gets you some limitations and a watermark if you don't pay $37. Premiere Pro is even more expensive.

OBS seems like a terrific free alternative, though.

No-Thanks
lol

for me hypercam has been the only free recording tool that records without all those issues here and there
you just have to dl the 264 compressor for it and configure everything(but every recording tool needs proper configuration of compression and such..)
