I am very much a traditional sword and shield type player but uses a gun for basic range. Are there any particular sets that are all-around good for this type of traditional play?

Bottom: vog/skolver
Top: Mask of seerus (will have one in a week or 2. U wanna buy)or the elemental/freeze gunslinger hat with dmg medium(forget the name)
Shield: bts or owlite
Your best sets to choose are Skolver, Vog, and Snarbolax. They all provide damage bonuses for swords, cover all defense types, and offer good status resistances (fire and poison anyway). Most newcomers choose to split their armor set into Skolver and Vog when you get to 5* so you have a wider array of resist and DMG and ASI Medium on your swords. When you get more funds, you usually craft the other halves and work towards going to a Shadow Lair to get Snarbolax.
If you buy the OCH (Operation Crimson Hammer) DLC, you can get the Perfect Mask of Seerus, which is an incredibly powerful gunslinger piece that gives you tons of shock and fire resist (the most dangerous statuses), normal and elemental defense, and ASI Low and CTR Medium on your guns. You also gain a weakness to poison and freeze, but neither is that bad of a status the majority of the time.
But if you think you can handle the overpoweredness that is Chaos, you could just get that and roflstomp things with that since it gives you DMG and CTR VH on ALL equipped weapons, but in exchange you're restricted to normal and elemental defense as well reducing your status resistances (Fire, Shock, Poison, Freeze, and Curse) to very low, so you really can't afford to take much hits. In practice, this is the best armor set, but only if you're able to use it.
Personally, I would get Skolver Coat + Vog Cap (and Perfect Mask of Seerus if you can buy OCH). This set is the most popular choice for newcomers.
Pode, I have a detailed sword guide written for people in your situation. It discusses sword choices, sidearm guns, armor, etc. Perhaps it could give you ideas for more specific follow-up questions.
