I have a new laptop I tried out a bit and the game freely exits out from time to time while I'm either in gameplay or away from the keyboard. I want to know if this can be fixed or is it a windows 8.1 bug?

I have not used Windows 8 much because 7 is still better. Try checking all your Computer settings then check all your game settings just to be sure they are both working right. You could try re-installing the game if nothing else works.

I have exactly the same problem... the game will completely close every so often... usually when I or someone else is loading into an area. I am also using a new laptop running Windows 8.1...

It sounds like an auto-close for unresponsive programs (as with the timing seems to be when the program usually goes unresponsive).
I don't have windows 8.1 but it sounds like poking around with random hidden options may be a good start.

if spiral knight doesn't work with windows 8
so move your pc to windows 7

My comment was in response to #3, when one of my systems experiences a brief pause in application responsiveness (where on windows, it goes grey and adds "(Unresponsive)" to the window name). This is unrelated to loading maps and is caused by players joining, monsters, and/or stuttering internet (not completely sure).
I have Windows 8.1 and that doesn't happen, sorry can't help
