Okay, I haven't seen very thorough threads on the Render Effects Option present in the game, so I will try my best to explain them, feel free to correct any mistakes I may make.

First off this graphic option is not recommended on slower computers with integrated graphics or generally low specifications.

Render effects basically tweaks graphical effects and particles and fogs to look more better and visually pleasing

These Present effects include:
-Background Depth of Field Present in stage backgrounds to refine distant details. (This one is the most noticeable among most players)
-Weapon Effects Refined Charging certain weapons and releasing the charge is noticeable between render effects on and off, examples include the Barbarous Thorn Blade or Antigua lines, and Wild Hunting Blade wolvers. The spectral creatures and effects of these weapons look a lot better when render effects is turned on, you can see more detail on the creature too, as compared to turning off render effects, it just looks like a mess. (Low Deailed)
-Certain Enemies Look Better Monsters such as slimes have noticeably better transparency effects, and chromalisks as well have better cloaking effects.
-Fog & Particles Refined Fog present on "High" graphic settings looks a lot better along with better particle details and perhaps status effects also May include more details. (Unsure about this as I have not looked into this category much.)

***If anyone has anything else to add to this, just comment down below with what else is noticeably more refined with render effects present.

Hope this helps! Thanks!

while you're at it

Any attempt to explain esoteric parts of the game are appreciated, I'm sure. But anyone who is interested in this thread may also be interested in previous threads like it:

Mash-up

More so a mash-up of everything else I've found via search to help simplify it into one thread.

Post above this one also will help if I missed anything for anyone interested in knowing, thanks a ton Bopp!

New and Old

I have two laptops in which I compare Spiral Knights with. The old one seems to perform faster (slightly buggy) but less graphical animation. On my new laptop, my knight seems to move slower but more visually pleasing. Plus, during the Apple-crea event, the Apple-crea has a glare set down so I can see where (s)he's looking at, but on the new laptop, there is no sight of his glare on the ground, but seemed to be far more visually pleasing, via fog, animations, and such.

Another thing to add

Thanks for the comparison Karituo, perhaps the abilities of graphic devices take a toll on what is shown and what is not.
Another example would be that with render effects on, certain objects with many cards, are no longer present, but with compatibility mode on these objects return, such as the small flags on the ledge west of the auction house in haven, this goes for any other small flags and objects that are not too noticeable unless you pay close attention, may be a bug or just a graphic driver issue but I've tested this with several computers, weak and powerful.
