Earlier today I was having some connection issues. I'd black out when loading and I'd have to quit SK and restart. Mentioned it to the friend I was going to run with and he stated he had had the same problem earlier. I got the issue again a while later, and then my client said that the game is being updated and I should try again in a few minutes. This was in the SK client, the patcher didn't show up or anything.
Now I'm able to log on again, so this seems rather inconsistent.
I'm experiencing the same thing, farming results into black screens.
SK is simply unplayable.
Same here. I try to load up a mission (Not just Alone in the Dark; it's happened with the Pinch of Salt mission as well) and I get a black screen. I try to restart the game and the "game is being updated" text appears.

I'm guessing its not game being stuck updating issue, its been 5 hours now.
Tried logging in using non-steam username and it works just fine. After that I logged out, logged in through Steam and it cleared the "game is being updated" message. Go figure.
I'm playing non steam version of this game, and i get the same error of "updating"

Same issue here. Black screen on loading some mission lobby forces me to quit the game, then "server is updating" message when trying to log back in - which lasts for hours. Fix it plz.

This has happened twice to me now, and each time I can only log in after waiting 5-10 mins for my "ghost" to time out of SK. That is probably why you think launching SK in non-steam browser works; it actually doesn't but the time you spent doing that allowed your "ghost" to time out, thus letting you back in game with Steam...
Same here. Happens every once in a while after trying to load a mission. Yesterday got it after 50 speed runs through Alone in he Dark mission (thanks Kataclysm), today after 15 runs and then again just one attempt later. Black screen, closing the window, re-openning and [this] pops-up. I have to wait anywhere from 5-10 minutes before being able to play again.
//EDIT: Using Steam, if that's any help. 5 minutes of being unable to login for 5 minutes of playing, awesome.
