I'd link to a documentary about shell shock on YouTube but the contents of it probably violate the forum rules. If you wish to find it, you can search for "shell shock" on YouTube. It's a documentary split in four parts, with about 15 minutes per part.

I saw a person with the mecha knight helmet costume this evening. Pretty cool, I thought. Dressing up as Mechas is something I'm sure plenty of people have wanted to before. A notable aspect of the helmet is that it constantly shakes.

My second thought about these helmets were that they reminded me a lot about shell shock, a condition which appeared during the 1st world war among soldiers who frequently were close to explosions. Similarly to the new mecha knights helmets is that those suffering the most severe cases of shell shock were constantly shaking. I'm finding the helmet pretty bothersome to look at. In fact, I'd rather not look at it at all. I suppose I may be overreacting, but I think this is the most disturbing thing I've ever seen in Spiral Knights.

Apocrean grip on a knight

Apocrean grip on a knight wearing splash sarong........ that is disturbing, or perhaps it is just the thoughts that you are thinking when you envision that scene....

I also found watching the new helm stomach turning, maybe it'd be better if it shook once every 10 seconds or something, like how the regular mecha knights putter, but the way it is now is unnerving.

It sounds like more of a personal psychological issue, with you relating it to war.

But even without the association, by itself, the shaking is kind of weird. It just seems reminiscent of seizure-like actions.

Id be up for removing the seizure animation, since if one person brought it up as an issue, there are probably many other people who feel similarly.

Remove the seizure? The

Remove the seizure? The seizure part is what makes the helm amazing - there's just something hilarious about having a portable seizure in your inventory.

Then you look at the suit...

It's missing body parts!
Now this really is secretly a "Wanna be a war veteran?" promo.

Hm, I didn't think others would actually feel the same way. Maybe we should make a suggestion thread about removing/reducing it.

Silly nightmare :) Spiral knights aren't 16 years old Japanese school girls, they would be fine.

Mecha Knights' heads also shake constantly, and that never seemed to disturb anyone. I think that's a bit of overreacting.

As a person who actually suffers from epileptic seizures, I don't really mind the shaking. It's pretty neat that they shake, even.

I get that it could disturb some war-torn families though.

@Jendar Nox
Mecha Knights are designed to be robots, not humanoids. Putting such a helm on a knight makes the difference between a poorly built robot with a shaky motor and a person suffering from constant shaking/seizures.

@Ychi
I don't think there are an awful lot of people with family who participated in WW 1 in SK, especially considering that most of the players are pretty young. Shell shock was, as far as I know, not at all common during later wars as trench warfare soon became outdated.

Goodness, I never would've made that association. D: That's quite unfortunate.

The shaking is a bit strange on our knights, but it looks pretty much like the same sort of shaking that our Mecha Knight comrades experience? Every ten seconds or so they get an extra twitch due to the poor circuitry but I always thought they were pretty shaky.

I think my biggest complaint about the helmet is that it's a bit smaller than our heads are normally, haha. We really do squish our knights into the tiniest of armors.

I think that pretty much every war game ever is sort of.... wrong, in the way that war is not a game, but a tradgedy among a people and really isn't something we should ever be proud of or do for fun. At the same time, the entire notion of things being "wrong" is but a notion in itself, and nothing truly exists anyway.
