Upgrading your weapons will always give you the greatest return.
Upgrading your armor/shield will only allow you to make a more mistakes. You can do the same thing by just playing better.

I'd suggest cryotech if your going to hit Vana in the near future
Don't listen to him/her. That's a very bad decision.
Group play allows you to get more out of mineral deposits and sometimes more crowns and heat (I think so, at least.) It also allows for revival without energy consumption, people to get you out of sticky situations (like getting frozen or surrounded), and even cover energy costs if need be or wanted.
Do recall, though, that when players pick up heat/crowns, each member gets them. Ex. Person A picks up 50 crowns means Person A, B, C, and D get 50 crowns. Materials are distributed to one person at a time, but I have no idea what the pattern is. I'm guessing a roundabout sort of pattern.
Is there any reason NOT to play solo, shy the "if you die, they can revive you" idea?
There are a few reasons to be in a group:
- You get more minerals in a group.
- You can skip floors by joining groups in progress. The first floors of a tier have significantly less rewards then the last floors of the tier, so the more floors you can skip the more crowns and heat you will get for your energy.
- Other players can help you do things like kill the healers, etc.
- You can watch and learn from others
- "Support" equipment, such as haze bombs, are more effective when you are in groups.
- It's easier to specialize in a group since you don't have to do everything yourself.
But, bad group members can easily lead to a party wipe, so there's an incentive to go solo as well.
Honestly, the fork-in-socket stupid isn't really noticeable til t2. That's when the fun starts, with swordsmen who unbound their shield key, and gunners busy shooting wolvers with alchemers. Even the bombers get dumb, sending mid-attack monsters flying all over the screen. So yes, T2 is where solo play is nice.
That being said, in T1, you'd have to try pretty hard to get wiped once you start building your arsenal up. So people can continue sticking forks in the wall outlet without consequence. Or electrifying quicksilvers/lighting oilers/knocking monsters into their teammates.
The biggest benefit to running in a group, aside from revives, is the ability to select complementary weapons. I do most of my runs with the same friend, and we've carefully selected our weapons to complement each other rather than duplicate. There are certainly strata where Ash of Agni is the best bomb to have (anything jelly, in particular), but with two of us going, we can also bring Shivermist for occasional places where that is more useful. I can bring a piercing sword and normal bomb while my mate brings a shadow sword and elemental gun, so between us we have all damage types covered without needing 4 weapon slots each (although we often go with 4 weapon slots each because variety is always more fun).
Obviously this kind of complementary gearing works best if you go regularly with the same group, so I recommend joining a guild, making some friends in game, or recruiting a few friends from the real world to play with you.

Soloing is from my noob experience, and still noob, "better" in T1/T2, max profit on cr/heat/mats/enemies die faster
"DECENT" Party is a must for T3, i tried and died soloing
