Disconnected from server previously but character is still shown as logged in on friend's buddy lists. Every time i try to start game (steam account) it tries to log on and just says disconnected from server. Have been waiting for character to auto disconnect but hasn't yet what should i do?

It takes around 10 minutes to disconnect from the server on idle out. Every time you try to log on that timer will reset.
First order of business should be to entertain yourself with something else until your friend can confirm you character has logged out.
