Hey steam users dont you regret corverting your old SK account to steam? I do cuz i cant log on to any computer that steam isnt downloaded onto. there should just be an option where you type in your steam account details, and bravo! your logged on. This should be done without needing to go onto steam.

Well, perhaps Spiral knights can create a mail to tell us how to create a username/password for us to log in when not using steam? This would be entirely optional of course.

It still doesn't address the fact that Steam linked accounts are required to go through Steamworks to authenticate. This isn't something thats specifically imposed by SK, but a requriement to enable Steam achivements and access to the Steam wallet. They have stated its not possible to back out of a steam conversion, and I'm guessing it has to do more with agreements with Steam more then any technical issue.
In order to do that, Valve would have to release an SDK of they're login system. Considering how much money can be invested in a steam account, thats a huge risk on valve's part if security is unintentionally (or intentionally) implemented poorly.
The alternative is for Value to publish a portable authentication program or plugin that the app can call on, letting the user can input info and would return login credentials to the program. This is similar to the Facebook connect setup where you are still going from a secure system to an insecure system.
