Anything that can reliably
Anything that can reliably deal status effects is always effective in PvP. Other than that there's just some general rules to follow:
Slow, high damage weapons are deadly, but if the opponent hits you with a faster weapon they can interrupt your attacks so you might never get a hit in!
Faster weapons lose a lot of their potential DPS because knights, unlike monsters, become immune to damage for a split second after each attack. You'll notice this the most if you try something like an autogun or a cutter; you'll hit the enemy with a lot of attacks but he'll only actually take damage from every other-or-so one after the first. Of course, if this prevents him from attacking you in return, then you'll have the upper hand.

try using a weapon that you know most people wont have resist against and some status effects imo i might use freezing or fire or stun

Best sword - probably static edge.
Best Gun - lol no
Tier 3:
Best sword: Barbarous thorn blade by far. GF distant second.
Best Bomb: Shivermist
Best Gun: Polaris maybe? Dunno really.

Best swords: bolted blade, static edge, hot edge, heavy hatchet, thwack hammer
Best gun: pummel gun (just don't miss!)
Best bombs: cold snap, firecracker, static bomb (starter pack bomb)
I would suggest static edge! (or shocking edge? The 1* version)
