No-Thanks

im just wondering if any1 else had lag spikes recently

my graphics and sounds were turned down to minimum, i even restarted java, but it suddenly went to red connection again

my browser works fine, so the only explanation i have is either that the new firefox 7 could be causing the issue or the problem comes from sk

so did any1 notice lag spikes lately? it ruined my fsc run!

btw i was NOT playing at the timings, when i usually lag

E: forgot to mention my account is converted to steam

Lag spikes can be caused by

Lag spikes can be caused by any number of events occurring. It can be from an automated update running on your computer your your internet connection having a "moment" (happens to me more than I'd like).

Unfortunately, being able to load a browser page isn't a good indicator of network latency. Unless you are able to dully account for all activity occuring on your home network connection diagnosing causes of lag can be difficult.

I also use steam and two

I also use steam and two times my connection went nuts in a Vanaduke fight - pings to local server rose from 10-20ms to as much as 1500ms. Strange thing is that after this when i went back to Haven (both times!) my connection went back to normal, and when i went into Clockworks (even a lobby) my connection to the game and local servers would go crazy again, going back to haven would make it come back. Whats even crazier is that when it occured the internet connection on all PCs connected to the same router would also go crazy the same way. Its hard for me to troubleshot that but my safe bet is that my router is at fault but i can't find out what exactly was triggering this issue.
I tried:
- killing javaw.exe
- rebooting my router
- restartng my pc
- messing around with MTU (1500, 1450, 1480)
None of this solved it at the times of the problem.
My router is Pentagram P 6361

How much bandwidth do you

How much bandwidth do you have though? The game can start uploading out of control if there isn't enough bandwidth available (which kind of makes the problem worse). Someone suggested you need at least 256k of upload bandwidth free to avoid the behavior.

1mbit/s upstream, but when

1mbit/s upstream, but when that happens i don't see any suspicious bandwith usage on my network card, (iirc it was around 0,02% on my 100mbit card according to windows' task manager).

If there is some advanced tool thats logs behavior like that i would use when it happens again.

I could never find a free

I could never find a free program that would be able to track per process (and the cheapest ones aren't cheap).... but it doesn't seem like it could be a problem if your only using around 200k total.

As an added Task manager pro-tip, if you switch to the networking tab, and from the menu bar go View, Select columns, then check the "Bytes sent per interval" & "Bytes Received per interval" boxes. Its very helpful in separating upstream/downstream when your trying to spot trouble.

*EDIT*

Then I realized I'm an idiot, and completely forgot about the Resource Monitor in Vista/Win7. The networking tab in it will show processes with current activity, and you can check a box next to it to have it show a breakdown of the bandwidth usage, TCP sessions, and open ports. If your on XP, you should still be able to find Sysinterals' various utilities (most of which should be on the MS technet now), which are the tools that were made into the Resource monitor.
