Redsg's thread "Wisp Shields" is what gave me this idea.
Basically, a shield has a chance to cause a status on block. I am not thinking throw this on every single shield that looks like it would cause status because it would look cool. This is just to be put on certain shields that need to be balanced (are lacking).
1. To make sure this is not overpowered or underpowered, it is up to messing with the "X" chance and "X" (strength of) status. To ensure this is not used to sit there with your shield activated so monsters whack at it and get fired etc, it would be a low chance to where you'd just be breaking your shield doing that. It'd be more like a nice bonus for when it happens, but needs to be powerful enough to actually mildly benefit someone.
2. To apply the status, you need to not just block the enemy, but the shield bounce that occurs after a shield is hit is what causes the status. The problem with this is making just that shield bounce following being hit cause the status and not every shield bounce which is player-controlled.
The reason for this is so you don't magically shock etc a gun puppy far away from you when you blocked its shot on the other end of the map. That just wouldn't make sense.
3. My ideas (not the actual suggestion, just ideas) of what shields would get what status.
a. Aegis, Ancient Plate Shield, and Omega Shell - Give it an x chance of causing x stun. These shields simply need something to it besides common defenses (and stun for ancient plate).
b. Dragon Scale Shield - Give it an x chance of causing x fire. This might seem like a total contradiction because it protects from fire and if it dealt fire it wouldn't affect the things that it protects from, but it isn't that entirely. Some people got this shield back when you couldn't swap shields every level at arsenal stations. It would be good for them to see a new use or benefit to this shield on things other than fire-causing monsters like the days when carrying one meant something.
c. Heater Shield - I would honestly remake this shield overall:
1. It needs to be bigger graphically
2. It needs to look freeze-themed to go with the design of "Molteny shield protects from fiery things" and "Dark shield protects from evil things" and "Tough shield protects from piercey things"
Why: An owlite (looks holy-ish if you know what I mean) does not protect from evil things while a skelly shield does not protect from holy-ish things(though there is not holy-ish thing to protect from).
So... This shield should be freeze-themed so it protects from freeze-themed things. It totally contradicts a lot of things in the game to be a "heater" shield and protect from freeze, though it might in your head make sense.
and 3. I think it should have x chance of causing x freeze. This would make it a situational shield and very unique: would not want it while surrounded because you can make things even worse, but can escape something that just hit you easily and you have open room to move.
With number 3, it would have its downs, and it would have its ups to keep it from being overpowered. Another reason it wouldn't be overpowered is because it protects from freeze, which isn't exactly something feared of in PvE nor is there any elemental and freeze dealing boss.
So... what do you guys think? sorry if I typed too much...
So the bump animation is what causes the status?
I see one small problem.
What if someone just constantly shield bumped to inflict statuses?
