Easy fix.
I've had the same problem. It can be fixed rather easily though, the game doesn't actually crash, it just becomes unable to restore the window. If you tab out while the overlay is out, open up Task Manager, and on the Applications tab, click on Spiral Knights and click on the "Switch To" button. It'll bring Spiral Knights back up, and the overlay might durp up for a second or two while it remembers that it's still active.

Genius. I feel like an idiot for not seeing this... Just tested it on SK and another game with the issue and both work fine with this method. It's an extra step, but at least you're not stuck minimized.

It's not just SK that experiences this. Some games that offer the Steam overlay seem to lock up when Alt+Tabbing. It happens to roughly 1/3 of my Steam games, which aren't many. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a Steam issue and SK can do nothing about it :/
I've just become accustomed to not using the overlay, and just minimizing to use a normal browser (which runs faster than Steams crappy built-in one)
