Failed to connect to Server and Random Closing

Since my first day playing Spiral Knights, I've had the following problems:

At random times, Spiral Knights will just close. A small amount of testing has shown me that this is generally when I alt-tab to a different window, but on occasion it also happens randomly.

The other, more serious problem, is that sometimes, randomly, while the game is loading from one screen to another, I will be booted back to the main menu. Trying to log in again, results in the error "Unable to connect to server". A symptom of this is while I try to log back in, the game will freeze(gears in the background stop moving, music stops) and when it unfreezes, I receive the Unable to Connect message. If I wait a few minutes, I'm able to log back in.

These two constant bugs are really causing me to lose interest in Spiral Knights since they occur randomly and sometimes at the worst possible instance. I'm running the game through Steam and I believe my computer has all the minimum specifications. Any help other than the general "uninstall/reinstall" would be appreciated. Thanks.

Steam in general is riddled

Steam in general is riddled with bugs. Alt-tab is never reliable. Are you playing in full-screen mode? Does the problem occur in windowed mode too?

Post your computer specs like Hector said.

I'm using the Steam version.

I'm using the Steam version. Also full-screen mode generally. The alt-tabbing problem doesn't seem to occur in windowed mode but I don't really use windowed mode often. The other problem is still occurring randomly and it seems more frequently.

Specs are as follows but I'm not exactly computer savvy:
Asus Laptop
Windows 7 OS
Intel Core i7-2620M 2.7GHz
8.192 GB Ram
Intel HD Graphics 1696 MB

My router is a Thomson Technicolor TG580v2. Thanks for the help.

This link will show you the steps to configure your router for the steam client. Your interface may look slightly different but it should still be about the same.

Steam's full-screen doesn't

Steam's full-screen doesn't play well with alt-tab for many games----Skyrim and Spiral Knights, for example. SK's full-screen in the standalone client also has serious issues. If your problem is random crashes with alt-tabbing in full-screen, then playing only in windowed mode will work. It's not as nice, but it's better than crashing.
From what I understand, Steam doesn't handle games in the background very well----it allows data that the game needs in RAM to be overwritten by other stuff you're doing, so you switch back to the game and it crashes because it's stuff is gone.

Skyrim crashes for me immediately after one alt-tab and SK can usually hold out for a couple.

I dunno if port forwarding will help you, but you can try it. If it doesn't help, alt-tab + full-screen is your problem.
