Ubuntu Linux - Turning

Recently I have been trying to run Spiral Knights on Ubuntu on a HP Elitebook 8540p. Everything works great except the following:

I am able to move except my character is "locked" facing one direction. This is the case whether I use the mouse, WASD, or the arrow keys.

As soon as I hit "enter" to bring up the chat box to type in (lower left) - I can turn (direction follows mouse)! But as soon as I hit enter again (finish sentence), I at that facing the last direction the mouse was pointing when the chat box was up.

So I can either move (any direction) and attack (ONE direction), or stand in one location and turn...

Any ideas?

Hmm... I only get that

Hmm... I only get that problem when a gamepad is attached to the computer.

No gamepad. The laptop does

No gamepad. The laptop does have both the nub (like Thinkpads) and trackpad.
I have tried nub as mouse and also external USB wired mouse. No difference.

Yeah, tried that. Put that in

Yeah, tried that. Put that in and it did not have any effect (same before as after). I actually put that change in and left it.

Not sure if what it is supposed to fix is the same as my issue?

All the keys work (always able to move/chat)... It is more like my mouse turn ability is reversed.

But it is good to eliminate possibilities.

I remember having that issue like a year ago I forget how I fixed it...

Try:
Unplugging all other "accessories" to your computer
Rebind the keys in the Control tab
Reinstalling the game and whatever Java thing you use
Checking for newer drivers

Aha! The answer is: remap

Aha! The answer is: remap controls!
In the "Key 3" column there is a bunch of mappings that start with #0 (#0 z+, #0 x+, ...)
Getting rid of those mappings fixes the issue!

I hypothesize the game is seeing a piece of hardware as a game controller.
The laptop has builtin keyboard, numpad, nub, and trackpad.
