Question about mat distribution

It seems as if mats are collected by those who's equipment is closest to the mat's star.

For example, my friend has all 4* equipment and he gets the majority of the mats. I have 5* equipment and I get ALL of the 5* mats. Is it supposed to be like that or what?

It's random. My friend once

It's random. My friend once got 5 4* materials and me none in a T2 run.
