I currently have the 3* graviton charge and know electron is just same but with elemental damage. I plan on getting a n electron bomb, but not vortex.
Since I will most likely just use it as a utility bomb and let swordsman charge up while monstors are sucked in, what's the point in getting vortex besides more damage?
Is it worth getting 5* vortex bombs?
"and also perhaps in its ability to suck in certain monsters (kats?)."
This is a misconception propagated by the wiki. Someone saw a kat dash right through their Graviton Vortex and assumed it was because kats are unaffected by it. Someone else saw a kat finish dashing somewhere close to their electron vortex and get sucked in and assumed, based on the wiki entry of graviton vortex, that Electron can affect kats while Graviton can't. I've seen kats get sucked up by and dash right through both bombs.
Their suction power is equal, and they can affect the same things (which is all things that can be affected by knockback, even if that's only the knockback presented by BAB), but they are not strong enough to stop quick dashes as those seen in Vanaduke, Trojans and Kats.
When I was heating my Electron Vortex, I noticed that the 3* version was unable to affect some larger enemies such as lumbers. I'm not sure if this is because of lower suction strength or simply because the lower radius meant that the bomb never got to affect the center of the lumbers due to their size.
As far as I'm aware , there are two differences between Electron and Graviton:
-Electron has a certain chance of Moderate shock. This used to be in the tooltip but is no longer.
-While Electron has identical damage to Haze bombs, Graviton is about 10% stronger.
This is by no means an extensive test, but I captured video of me dropping an Electron and a Graviton after one another and compared the time between detonation and collapse. Graviton's swirl might last as much as 0.1 seconds longer than Electron. The difference is too large for me to simply be off by a frame or four, but take it with a grain of salt anyway. In total the bombs seemed to last for 3.1 and 3.2 seconds.
Thanks for the clarification, Zeddy. I have Graviton but not Electron, so I've never been able to compare their suction.
In this recent thread, nobody (including you) comes out and explicitly declares that the two bombs have equal suction. Perhaps, for the sake of posterity, you could post again there?
So kats get pulled if they aren't moving, but can easily escape?
Then electron gives the wrong immpresion since what disables them is the shock.
Anything moving fast enough can escape the suction of the bombs.
Suction gets stronger with a higher star level (Striker dash in PvP is enough to escape the 3* but not the 5*)
Radius gets slightly larger
For Kats/Trojans, they're just moving so fast that the suction doesn't affect them. Mind, there's a video of someone using a Vortex bomb to trap Snarby (Link here, at the end of the video) so nothing is entirely proof to it.
Vortex bombs offer a very different play style from everything else in the game. They are very fun, if you're with a group that knows how to exploit them. If your swords have decent Charge Time Reduction, then you can even charge them into your own vortices. Also, I would say (without having serious measurements to back this up) that the radius improves greatly from 4-star to 5-star. So, yes, get a 5-star vortex bomb.
By the way, Electron Vortex differs from Graviton Vortex not just in its damage type, but also in status (shock vs. none), and also perhaps in its ability to suck in certain monsters (kats?).
