FIRST OF ALL DON'T GET ME WRONG, I STILL PLAY AND LOVE THE GAME

One day I was bored and I decided to search the steam ''free'' store to find cool free games, and then I came across a game named Spiral Knights, it drew my interest so I watched the trailer, once the trailer finished, I thought to myself, <> I downloaded the game and indeed, loved it, the interference was great, the battle mechanics were balanced and it was butt loads of fun,<>and there was. So I played for 1 hour and then after that for some weird reason I could no longer play missions, I tried to think why and then I saw a little sucker at the right bottom of my screen ENERGY 0. I asked around a bit I learned that I need energy to play missions, good, I thought I will just replenish it! I asked around how I could and someone told me <>...I had played for 1 hour, and in order to play again, I had to wait 22 WHOLE HOURS! So that Is the catch I thought!
I later found out that I a can pay to instantly fill my energy, but my parents don't agree, they think wasting even the MINIMUM amount of real money on the internet for VIRTUAL things is useless, WITH NO EXEPTIONS, and you have to agree, they are right at a certain point.

Well I naturally was pissed, but after a few days I thought to myself. Well I will be patient, the game is worth it to wait ONE WHOLE DAY.

A few days after that I introduced the game to my brother, he loved, simply LOVED IT. And after he played a bit and I sat on the computer again to play my turn (we have ONE computer) and I found out the horrible truth. WE HAD A SHARED ENERGY POOL! So in order for both of us to play equally each of us had to wait 2 ENTIRE DAYS WE HAD TO WAIT 2 ENTIRE DAYS TO PLAY FOR 2 HOURS EACH! Wait for my pool to fill ( One day me-One day him ) then I wait for HIS energy pool to fill (Two Days for me- First day for him)

And I thought: Hey! THIS GAME ISN'T FREE TO PLAY! Want a clear example? I play for 2 hours, I want to play some more but I CAN'T UNLESS I PAY FOR ENERGY. I CAN'T PLAY UNLESS I PAY FOR ENERGY , I CAN'T PLAY...UNLESS I PAY! (get it? it's funny because it rhymes)

Αnd so we reach the final conclusion: The game isn't free, it's a demo because you can't play AS MUCH AS YOU WANT FOR FREE unless you payr

It's because the rewards that compel a player to continue playing are drastically underwhelming and all that is left to keep fueling your desire to play PvE is the feeling of "oh man I gotta do this mission for today or I will waste prestige". Once you reach that 45k mark and beat all the SLs OOO is practically done with you and is giving you the green light to leave for another game--as you have most likely spent either a great deal of time and/or money reaching this point in the game.

EDIT: Nevermind I actually decided to read one of these posts for once and SURPRISE it's a "I'm too poor to enjoy this game"-post. You pay 60 dollars as the standard for video games now 20 dollars is a fair initial investment to get yourself going. You're going to spend an hour grinding for 200ce anyway when you could make 1800CE every hour in the real world at the minimum.

Energy-based games are not uncommon, and the reason why is because they don't want you to storm through all the "content" they have to offer. It gives them time to develop new content, and gives you the illusion of a bigger game.

It is true. While the game is pretty good. (Or in my eyes use to be) it does limit your gameplay a lot if you with play with your mist. There are other free to play games on steam that don't limit your gameplay like this. You just have to find them.

You can trade the crowns/mats you win during those 2 hours for more energy. Use that energy to play and earn crowns. Use those crowns to buy energy again and again and again, all without spending real money, only in-game currency.

You don't have to wait a whole day. You're doing it wrong.

There is a little thing

There is a little thing called an elevator pass you know. Five bucks a month, and you can play and grind to your heart's content. Compared to sixty bucks up front for a game that you'll only play for a few months at the most, don't you think that's fair? I certainly do. Not to mention, grinding FSC off of crystal energy is sustainable and profitable (though not the most efficient), provided you can stop whining and actually get that far.

@ Little-Juances What you are saying is both right and wrong, I am still tier 1 and spending 7600 crowns for 100 energy is just too expensive for new players. For experienced players it might be easy but for newbies like me and my bro... not so much.

If that's the case, stop crying and play the game like you're intended to. There are a LOT of free-to-play Vanguards (highest mission rank) out there that haven't spent a single dime on the game, and got as far as they did through the virtue of patience, something you seem to lack.

You can always trade in your crowns for CE, but as seeing that you are only tier 1 that you'll just end up being stuck there forever because of it. If you can't convince your parents to let you spend $5 for a free month of elevators (long enough to make you tier 3 if you are active) then maybe you should find another game like so many others have. With that said back when I started CE was only 3.5k per 100 and was completely possible for a tier 1 player to buy CE with their earned crowns and to keep progressing in the game.

There are numerous threads detailing the many, many effective strategies for being able to essentially play as long as you want without paying anything. There is no need to pay if you don't want to/can't, just as there is no need to flame people who are replying to your thread. Just spend some time using the search bar, you'll find the threads you need.

So many people justify this by saying 'it can be done with patience'. It depresses me...

You either pay to fully enjoy the game immediately, or you must make the game a time-eating chore before you can enjoy it. You access new levels and gear immediately... or grind many painful hours with the same equipment and environment.

It is how it must be done, but that doesn't make it a nonexistent problem. A hole in a wall is still there even if you have no sealing material to fix it.

The game doesn't need

The game doesn't need defending, it's big and old enough to watch after itself. I'm simply telling you that you're not exactly playing practically, or with any common sense. Tier 1 is basically an elongated tutorial, considering everything there is weaker, slower, and more fragile than anything in the main game, which is considered to be tier 2 and 3, where things actually do different damage types and can inflict much more powerful status. As for the energy system, it's where it is right now because of the Firestorm Citadel, mostly. Fifty points of mist there gives you 8000 crowns, plus another 3000 from boss tokens. That being said, you can buy 100 crystal energy and do it twice, which gives you twice the amount you paid for the energy. In terms you may understand, "Herp derp, run FSC once a day, do whatever you want with the remaining mist, and you can still do it over." If you can't be bothered to get that far, it's your own fault.

The only way to fail at FSC

The only way to fail at FSC is to have failures of teammates, or being a failure yourself. Considering I can do it by myself using the most fragile five-star set and a three-star shield, a trained monkey can do it with any durable set of armor and decent weapons.

But you won't have to wait another 22 hours if you have any sense of how currency works. You can play through FSC twice with a full tank of mist or 100 crystal energy. That's two attempts, and even if you only succeed at one, it's still profitable. You can also only play it once and use leftover mist to do whatever you want.

I already know you can't reach tier 2 in one hour of gameplay. You might be able to reach and beat Snarby with one mist tank. If the levels before you reach Haven don't eat your energy which I think they do. Nonetheless the game these days does spoon feed gear to players which I forgot since I started way before the missions release.

You also seem to be forgetting that there is more than one player. Ellthan and a brother. Both using a shared mist tank because they are both free. Unless they want to no life Spiral Knights and play merchant with low paying items then they are both doom too take twice as long. This also doesn't count any revives since they are both new and not everyone is instantly a no dying pro. With that said. When they reach Jelly Palace they will be at the first grindfest area of the game, 2nd will be FSC, and unless they want to buy a pass or make Spiral Knights their 2nd job playing merchant they will be seeing a lot of those places.. for the rest of their SK life.

Also you keep telling a tier 1 player to go play FSC...

FSC is Firestorm Citadel. It is the "end game" Tier 3 area. Only after that is playing the Shadow Lairs which is just rehashes of the 4 boss areas and bosses. Also Three Rings still hasn't made any sense out of the mission system yet so you can actually get an invite to there as a tier 1 player if people wanted to carry you.

Anyway, yeah FSC is a tier 3 boss area. Full of fire, shadow damage, and hordes of slow moving zombies. It is where you will spend 90% of your Spiral Knights life grinding if you don't want to give Three Rings $$ or want to play merchant as a 2nd job.

Also, it's entirely possible to have multiple accounts from the same computer without sharing mist. As for reaching tier 2 within an hour, it's also possible, considering you can buy 2-star armor, weapons, and shields from the auction house for as low as 1000 crowns.

As for why I'm telling him about FSC, it's so I can make his cute little head understand why crystal energy is priced at how much it is. It's also undoubtedly the most lucrative place to get crowns in the shortest amount of time and mist, so why not plan ahead. Foresight in this game is key, especially when it comes to picking equipment. That being said, if you try to play FSC with the wrong gear, you're gonna have a bad time.

Here's a tip:

Tip 1.) Sharing sucks. Siblings suck harder.

Tip 2.) Because sharing blows, start a new account off of Kongregate or this site - accounts are free and you'll have all the mist to yourself because they're separate.

Tip 3.) Plan ahead with gear & weapon crafting - find what recipes you want, what mats they'll need, and sell all the crap mats you don't need for profit - eventually you'll have enough extra CR to buy CE, and thus more play time.

Tip 4.) Steam trading. I don't do this myself, but you can get stuff otherwise unobtainable w/o paying in SK by trading with other players for them with other items from other games like TF2 (hats, repeat weapons, crates, etc.).

Straight from the Spiral Knights Wiki: This is the most commonly observed scenario when there is a household shared computer. In this case all free accounts used will share Mist Energy as if they are the same person. If you log on at another computer the system will default to the player with the least amount of Energy. For example, if the owner of Account B has played on Computer B goes to play on the Computer of Account C that computer's Mist Energy reserve will default to whatever Account B had left.

Only way to get past that is to pay $$ which they can't do. At this point I can't tell if Dementia-Praecox is a troll and try to do what Spook said and look into the other Spiral Knight clients.

Ellthan this is all you need to know.

You and your brother will always have a shared mist tank if none of you can spend money on Spiral Knights if what Spook said doesn't work. As a tier 1 player you should just focus on doing your missions with your mist while it gives you 2 star gear so you can start tier 2 after the Snarbalox mission. How you and your brother will do this is up to you two since you will both have a shared mist account until one of you spends $$ on Spiral Knights (if once again what Spook said doesn't work). I would suggest not trying to buy CE until you can grind Jelly Palace (tier 2 boss area). Just play your 100 mist each day and find something else to play or do between then. You can sell materials you find for more crowns. On that note the price of crafting gear increases also. While the game will hand you some basic Star 2 gear from doing the missions. It will give you recipes later for the basic Star 3, Star 4, and Star 5 gear. Though crafting cost for Star 3 is 200 energy + some crowns and materials. Star 4 is 400 energy + the same. Star 5 is 800 energy + the same. The place that will hit you the hardest as a free to play player is going to be the wall from Star 3 to Star 4 and Star 4 to Star 5 gear.

As you have already noticed. Playing a level cost 10 energy. Tier 1 revive is 2 energy. Tier 2 is 5 energy. Tier 3 is 10 energy with the price doubling each revive. So try your best to not die or have your whole party wipe.

And the last note. Spiral Knights will always be a grindfest unless you can become a top tier merchant and buy/sell the good stuff. I have to go do other things now. Hopefully some other players will help you along the way and not give partly false advice.

@Spook - Thanks for helping with some actually legit advice. The community needs more players that know how to explain things to tier 1 players than just straight up saying go grind FSC.

Had brothers - 2 of them. I know very well how much it sucks to share when you only get 1/3rd of something. I'm just being honest.

Also, it's from a practicable standpoint - you're not going to get very far in ANY game if you only have 1/2 your resources available at any time. May as well start a new account and then send all your money, materials, and whatever else that isn't bound to you via mail to the new alternate account.

My experience

I played for 3weeks before i started hating the game, not the game itself but the players particularly LD player. I can handle trashtalking in dota 2 and LoL but this games player is beyond saving.

A lot of player brag about killing lagger which i find to be strange because in other games like TF2 nobody brags about killing lagger and this game has highly disproportionate amount of people bragging about killing lagger. I think the game should at least acknowledge this with information otherwise ego will inflate to size of moon.

The thing about Lockdown is that it's mostly for people that have already "beaten" the game and play it to test their skills, entertainment, or to glorify their guilds through the scoreboards. It's not a significant part of Spiral Knights in general, thankfully, and you can give it a miss and won't suffer very much.

My name in-game is Wodanct if you want to send one. Though don't be surprised if it doesn't get accepted right away.. or in a month since I am not actively playing Spiral Knights anymore. I'm on my 4th break from Spiral Knights out of getting bored. I went into playing Lockdown, even streaming my matches so friends could watch while not being on Spiral Knights but the toxic Lockdown community keeps showing up making any match turn into a flame or whine fest. You just need to find a good guild and find some good players. Nowdays I play Warframe and sometimes stream that instead. Maybe someday I'll return to Spiral Knights again but last time I only played for 2 weeks before moving on again. >.>

Gonna have to agree with you. This community is paradise compared to RF's.

Also, the game is quite easy to play without paying. It just takes a bit longer. Grind jelly king until your mist is done, buy 100ce, quit for the day. If you dont want to play a certain day, log in anyway and make hot edges with your mist, since itll recharge.

then, when you actually WANT to play for a longer session, youll have the CE to do so.

It isnt impossible, nor is it hard to play this game for free. You just have to be smart.
